Im wanting a Fox body mustang as my 1st car.Ill be 17 in 19 days. What should I look out for when looking at one? I have a budget of $3000 to spend and im looking for one that will need small work because I love working on stuff. I will not be drag racing or anything, mostly just for me to have fun in. I will be putting aftermarket parts on it of course, what would be the best mod for the money? Headers? I will most likely keep it N/A. If the car needs a rebuilt motor what brand pistons should I be looking at and what compression would be good that i can still run 93 octane or less.

Thanks

first question: have you driven or riden in a 5.0 stang? Find one thats all stock, plain and simple, Ive done it 4 times and im 17, everything is in place like it should be and not hacked. stay n/a, especially if youve had no experience with blowers turbos or nos. Oh yeah make sure you get a 5speed!!

Oh yeah welcome to the crazyness that will control your life forever now!! LOL j/k

If you are only looking to spend 3k, don't be TOO picky about it, but make sure it has little/no rust. Everything else on a fox body is easy to fix and/or change if you don't mind getting your hands dirty.

Welcome to Stang-net!.. you Could look for stock/ish Stangs or slightly modded ones also, as long as its from somone that knows what there doing!.. Look For Welds under the Hood, under the car that could be from a wreck... you dont want to by a car thats been put back togeather! look for flaws in the paint and take a magnet with you.. a magnet will not stick to bondo... Look all under the car for sitting leaks on the ground! look up under the car for leaks on or around the motor for leaks that arnt hitting the ground yet do to the fact that the seller has recently moved the car from the oil spots that it was sitting in!.. Good luck and happy hunting!! post pic's of cars your intersted in and the car that yor buying... detailed pics posted on here could help you buy the right car there are alot of car guys here that are that good, to see problems in pics of close up on motor! and or bodys... Take Care!

I got mine last summer for $2700 and the only real issue is some rust in the lower 1/4's and the front fenders. It had 97k and ran great with no leaks.

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

Yes im going to get a 5 speed. I don't know to much about fuel injection and car motors. Im used to re jetting carbs and stuff.

But i know alot about 4 wheeler, and dirtbike motors. So I should have fun learning even more.

What are popular things that go bad on 5.0s ?

Overheating or running warm seems to be the most common problem I have

One of the most common problems seems to be the heater core blowing and its a real pain to change. Mine blew 2 weeks after buying the car.

Another problem seems to be that the car just isnt fast enough. Theres alot of ways to fix that though but just when you start to think its fast you realize it can be faster.

I got my car shortly after I turned 16. Still holding together 3 years later. Served very well as a daily driver, and is doing well with mods thrown to it. The car isn't that quick, but can very easily get a new driver hurt. Get used to driving it, and start with the exhaust. Gear it after that. Gears is what will give you the best gains for the money, but I would hold off until your used to driving the car first.

Post counts only go up when you post in the Tech section, not the Talk section.

Notchbacks are getting harder to find, especially clean ones.
