2000 GT blowing coolant out of tail pipes

My 2000 GT is blowing coolant out of tail pipes. It happened once where it blew about a half cup of coolant out of the pipes. No smoke and runs fine. What would cause this?

There are no visible leaks anywhere else but out of the pipes. What would cause this? Intake?

A head gasket could be partially blown. Does it happen when you really get on the car?

The motor was just rebuilt. It was sitting there at idle and I reved it to 2000 rpm and then when I went to the back of the car and I saw the water on the ground.

I was told that the head gaskets almost never go out on these cars. Could it be something else?

Are you sure it was coolant, and not water? You've said both so far. Coolant generally burns before it reaches the tips, as a sweet smelling white smoke. If it's just a bunch of water, then it's probably just condensation.

Yea but this is to much water to be condensation. Like close to a cup. Could an intake gasket cause this?

Didn't wash the car. It was cold. Last week my friends car did the same thing three times. Way to much water to be condensation. Is there water running through or around the intake manifold?

I've never seen ANYTHING cause straight, unburned coolant, to be shot out the exhaust pipe.

Considering the fundamentals of an internal combustion engine, anything inside the intake manifold is sent through the combustion chamber before it ever hits the pipes.

Heck, I don't know man.. if you do figure it out, please let us know.

How could water get all the way through with out turning into alot of smoke?

If coolant is being lost through your exhaust, it'll show up as low in your radiator/resorvoir.

Check your coolant level and run it around till your temp comes up to operating temp.

Let it cool down completely and check your coolant level.

If coolant is leaking, your coolant level MUST drop. If your level doesn't drop, you aren't leaking coolant.


If your motor was recently rebuilt... that throws a red flag on the gasket possibility!!!!

The only way something ends up in the tailpipes, is if it has already gone through the combustion chamber, and came back out the exhaust port, or if somebody pours it in from the tailpipe end (with the exception of condensation that forms inside the pipes themselves..)

I've seen close to that much condensation come out during dyno pulls.. Hell, if a cup is coming out everytime you stand on it then your radiator would be soon empty..

Hope I'm wrong, but read something about a ford recall on these plastic intakes recently. I think the recall was on the ford trucks, but they said the same plastic intakes were used on some of the 4.6 2000 year Mustangs.
The intakes are cracking. I took notice, because I have a 2000 GT myself. The article said Ford had neglected to recall the Mustangs "at this point", but was fixing the trucks under reacall at a cost of $750 each to Ford. I believe the symtoms were as you are describing.

I'm with sgarlic. Is it coolant, or is it water (condensation)? Big difference!

Yea, there is an issue with the plastic intakes, but it's because they are known to crack. In any case, even a cracked intake manifold isn't going to magically transfer unburned coolant to your tailpipes.

It's water. If you still think everybody else is wrong, save a cup of it, and mail it somewhere to have it analyzed.

my opinion is you're just being paranoid, h2o is a byproduct of proper combustion, and theres no way for coolant to just dump out unburnt, you would definately smell it burning, there's no mistaking the white cloud coming out of the exhaust

but if it was ccolant wouldn't it be a heavy cloud of smoke and it would be thicker as you revv the car...... i think it's just condesation i get alot due to the aftermarket exhaust
