2000 3.8 Mustang; fuel pump failed after 18 years. Had Ford replace it. That one failed after 18 months (they gave me the part cost back).

When it failed (we were on the road), replaced with a NAPA part. NAPA tech does the work. That one leaked fuel when the tank was full. Had it replaced it again, at a different NAPA shop (we had moved); was a long repair because, as I was told, the first fuel pump wouldn't turn off, so needed to order a second pump (AC Delco) That one, after a month, was hard start, and leaked when the tank was filled. Having it replaced again, as the garage smells like fuel when the car is parked there. So this is fuel pump #5 or #6 in less than a year. Every time, when they drop the tank, they agree, yup, it's a fuel pump problem.

These are professionals replacing the fuel pump under warrantee (fortunately, I guess) and I can't believe that they are having such a parts quality issue with a basic component like a fuel pump for the Pony. I could believe one shop maybe making a mistake at install, but not 3 shops.

Have others had the same issue? Are all the fuel pumps for this vintage Pony sourced from the same place, regardless of brand name, so that they have the same set of issues? Or is there something in the fuel that is eating some component of the pump, causing the issue?

Thanks in advance......

I have to agree with 89ripper, sounds like there are a bunch of morons masquerading as mechanics, I bought one of the cheapest fuel pumps and new filters on amazon, think i paid about $60 for both and it took a few hours to install but they've been working flawlessly for months now, wished i could say the same about the rest of the car, fords are still fords and fords better ideas are usual the worst ideas possible, but they look good. you should install your next pump yourself, watch a few youtube videos and you'll be an expert in no time....

Agreed, however... Replacement parts in general have become popular with garbage quality control. Fuel pumps, sensors, solenoids, etc...; You're just as likely to get a bad part out of the box as a good one.

Unfortunately as much time as you have spent dealing with this you could have done it yourself but that may or may not be your thing. Video on how to do it here:

Regardless of whether or not you do it it’s good to know what it takes.

Replacement Walbro pump is here:

Walbro seems to have the best quality and the vendor above sells genuine Walbro pumps. It’s what most of us Fox Body guys run other than Aeromotove which above what you are needing flow rate wise.

Just a quick Google search and you are not the only one having pump issues.
