Hey guys im new to this thread so how are ya? ok i bought a mustang bullitt and the transmission sounds ****ty. 3rd gear grinds when i try to put it into gear but sometimes if i accelerate slowly it will go in without grinding. i was going to buy a whole new t3650 transmission and put it in but i was wondering if there is a cheaper way like just buying the gears. please reply with what you think i should do,, and how hard it would to do it.. me n my friend are going to attemp to fix this tranny, we never worked on any serious engine or any transmission work. i downloaded and printed a service manual on how to take apart and put back together a Tremec 3650 transmission. thanks for your replys.

you must use a torch to get everything apart and back on. itsnot easy. look into a TKO 500 or 600 for a cheap replacement tranny. oraT56 6 speed would be even better!

Sure, you can buy new gears, synchros, etc...and that transmission isn't that hard to repair yourself if you have the right tools. There's also an upgrade kit available with better synchros and beefed-up shift forks - depending on when the trans was built, yours might already have these, but if not, I'd definitely recommend it. My Dad and I have done several 3650 re-builds and I can scan our notes (there's a few little quirky things the manual doesn't describe well) and give you a list of the tools you'll need if you decide to do it yourself...

It's a tough trans to work on. I would never try one. I can rebuild a T-5 with my eyes closed, but the 3650 is a scary thought for me

i dont think the upgrade kit is on it, not sure i just bought the car but the whole transmission all gears sound crappy. yea were gona do it ourselves instead of paying this guy that was going to do it $500 i thought id spend that on tools and parts instead. and save the $1000 on the new T3650.....can a T56 6 speed and the TKO's fit perfect in my car? 2001 mustang bullitt. thanks for the replys sory i took so long 2 reply havent been on

I mean this in the most non flamatory and nicest possible way...type out complete words and use proper punctuation or you're going to get annoying very fast and people won't want to help you. You seem cool and all but reading your posts makes it sound like you're a 13 year old asking for help.

As for the issue, I know the 3650's are known for grinding gears and such and thought that dealerships usually fixed the issue for free or fairly cheap. Someone else who's had the issue should be able to chime in. Also there is a fairly lengthy thread regarding 3650 issues, search in the 4.6 Tech area for it.

either one CAN have an upgraded 26 spline input shaft. that would require a new clutch. the T56 is a 6 speed. TKO is a 5 speed.

as far as better transmission, there are different versions of each. a regular T56 like a cobra one is weaker than a Viper Spec T56. a TKO 500 is weaker than a TKO 600.

i have a Viper T56 in my Paxton car and my buddy has a TKO 600 in his KB car. both are strong trannys but my T56 is a MUCH smoother tranny. BUT mine is also about $4000 for a complete kit compared to the TKO 600 costing about $2000 for a complete kit.

the T56 requires a modified cross member and a shorter drive shaft. the TKO is a bolt in replacement

you have a 10 spline input now.

a cobra T56 will be more than enough for you. a TKO 500 may even be overkill. you dont need a really strong tranny for what you listed
