2002, 3.73 Gear?

I have the fortune of finding someone that has a 3.73 gear set out of a 2002 GT, and will sell them to me for $25. I have an 85 GT with a 8.8 rear. Will the ring and pinion from the 8.8 out of the 2002 fit in an older rear end? I assume it will. That the only thing that is different is the length of the axles. Am I correct?

All 8.8 gears should be the same.

You do know that 3.73 gears never came in an 02 GT, so they were swapped in at some point, right? It's a pretty cheap buy, but if they're questionable it could be an expensive mistake.
