Okay, I know that no one smokes in their Mustangs but here is a question.

Ford says the cigarette lighter plugs into the powerpoint on the center of the dash between the vents. The Ford dealer's parts computer even shows a diagram of the lighter plugging in there. One major problem with that idea is that the powerpoint's inside diameter is larger then a lighter's outside diameter so that it won't fit tight enough to work. The powerpoints larger size is normal and a powerpoint's amperage is not rated high enough for a lighter. Ford does not have a solution and has not returned the dealer's call for help. There is also no kit available from Ford yet like the old smoker's package.

Any ideas?

Quit smoking? JK. Try some place like NAPA or Advance. They may have a replacement lighter for another car type that is larger. I always thought that the size was standard (because they have to accommodate power cords, etc., too).

Owner's manual on the 05 specifically states NOT to use the powerpoint for a lighter- they have a "Smoker's Kit" available as an accessory that goes in the console- uses a cupholder and (I presume) the powerpoint in the console.

The center dash powerpoint seems to be for a radar detector.

If no one smokes in their Mustang, then what's the problem?

there is a smoker's kit available in the options catalog at the dealer for the 2005 mustang, it consists of a cup in the cupholder, and something that looks like an ordinary car lighter.

I've just had a cigarette lighter installed and you're exactly right, the lighter itself is too small for the "power" outlet socket. What my dealer did was to order the lighter and the sleeve which replaces stock sleeve in your dash, turning the power outlet into a cigarette lighter. The dealer will need to install, because you need to open the dash to place the sleeve from behind. This might take some time, especially if the mechanic hasn't worked on an 05 before. Mine took almost three hours, but the service manager only charged me for one hour of work - said it was a learning experience for his mechanic. Get your guy to give you a price before he installs it. If they have any questions, tell them to contact Burt Weinman Ford in Chicago.

BTW-Don't quit smoking. The bad press is just more left-wing, big-government infantalization of the people. We have to wear seat belts, and maybe soon helmets, but at least we can still smoke and eat red meat!

Thanks for all the help!

I can't use the upper power point because I use it for the GPS. I'll try the dealer again regarding the kit for the lower power point.
