While i fully agree with your post - the only thing i would have to say is that even though the camaro and the like have had more powerful engines, been faster at the dragstrip, etc - Mustangs for the most part have outsold them. At one point 5-1 in sales both firebird AND camaro combined. For a superior car, I don't know why it was outsold by an car with sub par performance. Something about a Mustang that makes people want it.

From the proto I saw in person, the Camaro looks like ass. Since the Challenger (which I think is dead sexy) allready proved to be a pig, the 'maro is the only possible challenger (no pun intended) to the Stang other than the Ford designers themselves.

3 Dream cars for me from the bow tie line up are a 68-69 Camaro, a 67 'vette, or an 80's style Camaro (I always thought they looked more like a classic Camaro than the Fox Bodies looked like a Stang). Having said that my new fun dream car from the bow tie line up would be everything from the new Camaro into a 1980's RS body.

I'll stick with the Stang though. It might not look top notch, it might underperform numbers wise... In the end though I know I'll be able to make MINOR modifications and have the power and looks I want.

It's called something like 60% of Mustang owners are women (mostly the V6 variety). Women (in general) aren't concerned about power, they want something zippy and good looking. I think the Mustang is borderline when it comes to Badass and Cute... The new VW Beetle is Cute... The 'Vettes have usually been badass... most 'Vette owners are Men, most new Beetle owners are Women...

Most Stang owners are Women... So thanks V6 sales and thank you non-petrol head ladies.

(Before I get bashed, I know plenty of gear head women that know more about motors than I do)

as a former chevy guy i dont like it. it looks to thick on the sides and i dont think the lines flow very well. the drivetrain is excelent but its still to blocky. i have yet to see a set of rims that look good on it. it will respond to mods very well as do all ls engines. would i buy one? no. dealers are going to mark those cars up above 40gs and the average guy wont be able to afford one witch takes the car into a whole different direction then the muscle car roots. and if i were to spend 40gs on a car i'd just throw down some more and buy a gt500. also with todays economy i doubt that car will really sell even with a v6 in it. the average person cant even get approved for a auto loan right now witch will also contribute to low sales. I dont think the new camaro will be around very long with our gas prices and economy.

well for sure it will wiegh over 4000. its the chasis it uses. you just cant trim wieght off of and having IRS hurt it also.

i expect a slower GT500.

bill, ls3 cars are getting 30mpg+ with a good tune right now and the m6. Do you think the weight/aero is going to kill it that much with the m6 as far as mpg?

I see these cars going 12's bone stock with street tires in good conditions with a good driver. Shoot, a few ls1's broke in the 12's in full street trim with no mods on the stock tires. LS3's are notoriously rich, many stock cars are picking up 30-40rwhp with just an air filer and tune, not to mention ls3's vettes are seeing low 12's to high 11's right now, stock.

I guess we will see when it comes out

Thats funny you should say that,come to my town...College Station....Its just the opposite around here.I see more women driving new and old vettes and more "GUYS" driving the new beatles...with the dash flower,cracks me up everytime.

As for the new camaro I cant really make up my mind.I really dont like the front,rear and something about the roofline I dont like....I think chopped when I see it.Motor wise I like.
My stang may have less power but I like it alot more.I was a camaro/TA guy,I liked the power they have but the stangs just feels better.
As for the GTO's that was mentioned earlier.....when I see one from the front I think its a Grand am,when I see it from the rear,I think Toyota or Mazda.....the back end just doesnt look like an American made car of which I think hurt its sales.

I cant believe the v6 is rated at 300 hp! dang. and with a 11.7:1 compression or somethig crazy!
anyone know anything about the cost? twenty bucks says it'll be over 40k

I like the new Camaro and it's nice for the Mustang to have competition again. The weight and rear end really turn me off though.

I actually dig it, considering it stays at a reasonable price. I always hated the 4th gens even given the great power, just ugly and seemed slapped together really cheaply. Seems GM did it right this time, the Car, although pretty nice, does have a pretty ackward look at some angles and looks too blocky and cheap, kind of like a Tonka toy or something, don't know how timeless this design will be (probably not much), but at certain angles it has a sharp look.

The power speaks for itself, and although it will weigh alot, I don't see that affecting the performance much. Alot of the extra weight is due to the high safety the car is supposed to offer (pretty much it's a standard requirement for cars to meet these specs nowadays, so goodbye to super iight cars....)

It'll be interesting to see how it does.

Actually most modern muscle cars are in danger of disappearing, mostly because of high gas prices that will most likely get higher. Most people nowadays will not look to a camaro or mustang or challenger for their dd commuter car. If V6 sales tank, Detroit may very well allow the car to fade away.

According to GM the manual SS will weigh in at 3860 lbs and the auto version at 3913 lbs. The V6 versions depending on trim (LT or LS) and whether it is auto or stick will weigh from 3741 to 3780 lbs. A little heavy for me, but I'm sure most of that bulk is due to it's heavy rear suspension. Not as porky as the Challenger. The SRT8 should be no problem for the SS. As for the future Mustang engine, I hope Ford does go all out. If they can keep the Mustang slim coupled with a stout new engine, I think the Stang will be the winner in performance.

honestly, the motor is awesome but the looks i dont care for. I would drive one, but given my choice id take an 02 ws6 t/a or ss camaro

I knew I'd seen 3800 lb range when looking into these things a few months ago.

Personally I hope the V8's sell like hotcakes since my company will be making the starters for them. However, the are a PITA to make. We're just now going through the trial stage. But regardless you won't be finding a bowtie in my driveway, unless it belongs to someone else.
