I think I like my live axle, pair it up with a 400hp 5.0 and a 6spd manual, keep it under 3700lbs and that would be a sweet mustang

I'd love to see an IRS setup but they're too heavy if you can't cut weight elsewhere. Not only that, but it's not like the IRS setup on the '03-'04 Cobras was any great shakes. They suffered from some pretty bad wheel-hop and bounced around in the corners, too. They might as well have had a live-axle setup.

But, yeah, 400 hp and under 3700 lbs would be fine. I'd just have to find someplace on that car to remove 200-300 lbs without gutting the entire interior. As for the car itself, my choice would be the Deluxe GT with the 5spd and the Track Pack with the 3.73s. I can get the Track Pack on the Deluxe if I special order factory-direct. The only problem with doing this is that the Track Pack comes with the upgraded 19 inch wheels. Personally, I like the stock 18s that come on them.

Now 300hp out of a V6 is more like it

The extra 100hp of the 5.0 would be nice but where can you go to exploit it!!!

Provided the 2011 Mustang doesn't pork out like the rumor has it, it would probably be quite capable of running in the high 13s, and with 300 lbs less weight, even with 300 hp, it would take out the V6 Camaro.

REPORT: 2011 Ford Mustang to get upgraded Track Pack to handle 5.0 "Coyote" power? — Autoblog

First things first, Autoblog confirms that the Mustang came in 200lbs LESS than the M3..good news, secondly this mustang had P Zero Corsas on there..The same as the Lambo........ Third...This mule had only 1 tailpipe, its speculating that this GT.....had the Twin Turbo Eco-Boost in it !!! Is Ford just playing around...or is the new GT going Eco on us ?

I sure hope the GT isn't an ecoboost. I was thinking about upgrading if the 5.0 is released, but I'll never buy a mustang that sounds like a diesel.

My thoughts:

It was probably a 5.0 with dual exhaust routed out one side to throw people off. I highly highly doubt we will see the ecoboost engine in a mustang for several reasons: It's an expensive engine and Mustang GT fans (at least like me) would much rather prefer a N/A big V8 over a blown V6 that sounds like rice. My expectations for new engines next year are probably going to be the 3.7L V6 base and 5.0 V8 GT, who knows where they'll take the GT500.

^^^ Well my only concern is that the new Boss Mustang is scheduled to release in 2011 also.... Maybe the 5.0 is going to be reserved for specialty models.

V6 - 3.7lt 280 hp
GT - 3.5lt 365-385 hp Eco Boost
Boss - 5.0lt 400-430hp

Possibly. I can't think of a time when Ford bumped power in a specific model 85 HP from one year to the next. From the beginning of all the 5.0 rumors I always thought in my head they'd reserve it for Boss, Mach 1, Bullit, etc. Who knows what they'll do tho, maybe they'll surprise us.

That is what I have been saying.

With nothing comfirmed yet I'm pretty sure the line up will be similar to this:
V6 3.7L 250HP
V8 4.6L 315HP
Boss 5.0L 400HP

Eco-Boost will not be seen in a Mustang for a while if ever.

If the 5.0L WAS to replace the 4.6L I'm pretty sure the ecomony has pushed that back. And IF the EB was suppose to happen too, which I highly doubt, I'm sure the ecomony has something to do with it too.

Definitely not; at least for "regular" driving. Obviously it takes more fuel to make more hp but I can't see highway cruising at 70mph getting anything less than identical mileage if not better. Now if you were on a race track using all that power then fuel economy would drop. Also, I am sure the car will arrive with a 6 speed that will drop revs by 500-800 rpm so hwy mpg should go up if anything.

I just hope the articles are right that this car is 200 pounds lighter than the M3 so it comes in at 3,500 pounds or so.

Lastly, I'd like to see larger brakes on all four corners.

Oh the waiting for formal announcement.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. And I'm sure you are going to be paying about $40k for that new 5.0 as well. I think it's going to take another massive economic downturn, and I mean more than what's happening now, to lead Ford away from the tried and true GT V8.

The only argument I have for that is, Ford says EcoBoost 4cyl and 6cyl will replace V6 and V8 in 90% of it's line by 2013. You have to figure the super duty trucks will still be V8. I don't know how many percent that leaves for the mustang to stay v8?

Like I said before though, I would take EcoBoost over a 1979 302 any day!!!

I'm sure they are talking about the sedans. Not the Mustang. And this being an American issue, I can tell you the V8 trucks won't be going anywhere soon either. Actually, I'll put a large wager on that bet.

Actually, there are several sources saying the 3.5L EcoBoost will replace the 4.6L in F150's. Linky, Linky

"The fun-to-drive nature of EcoBoost engines is leading Ford to introduce these fuel-saving powertrains in large volumes virtually across its lineup. For example, by 2013 more than 90 percent of Ford's North American lineup will be available with EcoBoost technology, and nearly 80 percent of Ford's global nameplates will have an available EcoBoost option."

I guess it doesn't say "replace", it says EcoBoost will be available in more than 90% of Ford's North American lineup by 2013.

Ford currently offers 16 vehicles. Presumably, that means about 2 aren't getting EcoBoost. I'm betting on Super Duty Trucks and E Series Vans.
