With rumors around, I've been keeping a careful eye out for 2011 mustang press releases. I'm personally excited about the possibility of the twin turbo ecoboost 3.5 making 400+hp in the mustang, and of course the 400hp 5.0 with possibly direct injection. I'll likely be in the market for a new mustang in 1-2 years.

For now, the only official news is on what I didn't much care about... the v6 model. Yet I'm surprised to find it is exciting too:
a 3.7l V6 making 305hp, 280 ft lbs of torque (my 4.6 barely had that much torque from the factory!)
6 speed manual with optional 3.31 gears
30mpg highway, which is just awsome. No one else in the market can compete
10,000 mile oil change interval

Ford is really stepping up!

I'm pretty sure the base v6 mustang cost ~20k from 2005 onward. I would expect at least a jump in price, but hopefully it stays reasonable.

I can see ford selling a lot more base mustangs than they do now, because surely the price of the GT will have to increase too.

That is going to be a great v6 stang. It needs 4.10s seeing as that 3.7 revs up to 7k. Also put on a 93 oct tune and that little sixer will probably put out 320+ crank hp. Excellent job Ford, now I can't wait until Friday when we find out about the new GT. You know it will come with a 6 speed auto and manual but is it going to have the 400hp 5.0 or a 350hp version of the 4.6. If the 5.0 is back I will wait 2 years then pick one up.

I just don't see it happening I haven't read any of the press releases or followed anythingrelated to it however why would Ford abandon the 4.6 motor? The newer models are putting down wonderful numbers and are actually really responsive to mods.

I'd say get ready for another 4.6 and not expect 400+ horsepower or numbers like that.

The speculation over the years with regards to mod motors is just mind blowing. It killed us in the sn95 cars when they went to the 2v's, we sat at the sidelines while ford made the SVO heads that nobody could afford(except my brother in high school, which broke him), and did nothing. The LS cars killed us for years, and years. It was not until the blower cars like Tim(MPH) and others really pushed the 2v and helped level things out.

The 3v's were a little more fortunate, the aftermarket came around much quicker than it did with us back in the late 90's. Hopefully, if they change, the aftermarket will have a heads up. The new camaro's go off of the old ls3 pushrod motors, they are already ahead of the game. Lot's of catching up to do for GT's.

But then again, Ford builds a quality product, that is not faster than the Camaro, but sales more, and does not go years without production.

All my track buddies, Mark and Chris(GT500 owners, 900-1000hp cars) and John(650hp 3v blown car) all hate the idea of this. The 3v is a good improvement, and the aftermarket has come around. Keep it going IMO.

Ford has plenty of reason to replace the 4.6. First of all, it has never gotten good gas mileage. Gas mileage is becoming more and more important with new requirments coming into effect soon. Chevy's good old push rod could always beat the 4.6 in gas mileage in both the trucks and pony cars (LT-1, LS-1). In my opinion, the 4.6 was out of date when they started producing it. It's just not very efficient or powerful. I'm certain that the 4.6 is at the end of it's life cycle and that's ok with me. Ford got plenty of use out of it, but it just doesn't get the mileage or make the power needed.

These numbers are frankly astonishing considering that's the base engine now. Very impressive.

I'm still waiting on some hard news about the Coyote 5.0L engine though. I've haven't found anything other than speculation and the pictures I've seen are inconclusive as to whether it's a completely new architecture, modular based or Boss/Hurricane based.

To add to the pile of internet speculation, here's my take: From the few pics I've seen, the head design must be a different layout than the 2/3/4 valve modulars we're familiar with. Heads and cam covers look to be more compact with a lower overall profile. Appears to be a DOHC head but from the width of the head, there doesn't seem to be room for rocker arms, cams must act directly on the valves - could be patterned after the Ecoboost heads. That doesn't rule out a modular bottom end though - just need revised timing components and accessory packaging to go with the redesigned heads and intake. And, if 5.0L is as big as they you need to go with this motor now that the Boss can take care of larger displacement needs, then a big bore, short deck 4.6L based modular makes more sense than designing two brand new V8 families at the same time - just take the best bits from other engine families and put them into a new head design and stick it on top of a well-proven block.
