289 Heads on 302?

I had my 67 coupe for about 1 week then i wanted more Hp
i took the valve covers off and found that there where a pair of 289 heads!!!
the thing is that i have a 302 block.
I want to know did ford change these or some guy that owned it before me
what are the advantages of the 289 heads and what are the disadvantages?

289,302 and 351W heads are interchangeable. the 289 heads could have been worked on with bigger valves etc.

The first year of a 302 in a Mustang was 1968, and that was its highest output year (230 horsepower according to Chilton). The obvious first question would be is, are you sure your car has a 302?
If you have a 302, then, from what I've been able to ascertain, the reason the horsepower and torque was higher in 1968 was that the 1968 302 was using the same 54cc combustion chamber heads as the 289's. I don't know if the heads were stamped as 289 heads, but it seems quite likely that they may have been.
I can say this from experience: the difference between mid 70's heads, which I was running on the 302 that had been transplanted in my '65 when I initially bought the car, and the '68 heads, which I swapped about a year later, was quite substantial. The extra 30 or so horsepower you get from the increase in compression ratio can easily be felt from the seat of your pants. The moral of the story? Keep those 289 heads if they're working properly until you can afford some aluminum heads.

ok back to the story, Yes i Know for a fact that there 289 heads and a 302 block they both say this.

When i looked at some papers my friend has on 67 mustangs it says that most of the late model 67 started to comeout with the 302 blocks but ford had a bunch of over produced 289 heads, since ford new that the 289 heads would fit they put it on the 302 block and found a big differance in horsepower.

the 351w heads have bigger head bolts. the 302 and 289 heads would have to be drilled out to 1/2 irrc.

I do believe that special head bolts would be needed to put 351w heads on a 302/389.

the car is almost 40 years old. With only god knowing how many owners. alot of motors could of been ran through that car. also what could of happened is that the motor was rebuilt at some point over the 38 years of its existance and the Original heads could of been re used.

my 67 had half deluxe, half standard interior. With a C7 289, an C9 302 heads, a non stock 9", and no door tag.

these cars are a mystery unless its a low owner car.
