3.73 Gear Install

Ok guys you have convinced me to go with the 3.73 gears. I have a 2001 GT, 5 speed. I hooked up with a Ford mechanic who will install them for $200.00, very reasonable. He is even doing it at the dealer. besides the gears he says all I need to change is the speedo gear and that is it. What is up with everyone saying the gears need reflashing? What does that mean? Does the computer or something need to be changed also? I want to get done right the first time. Thanks

you don't need any speedo gears and stuff, you just need an ECU reflash or a chip..

I had 3.73's installed in my car and did not have the cpu
reflashed. I do have a Diablo chip that I did send back out
for reflash, but that was to get the most out of my new gears,
not so the car would run properly. I don't think you need to
reflash. I'm not sure?.

Yes, they are right. Since 99 our cars speedo has been working off of a senor. So there is no gear to replace. You have 2 options(that is if you have a 5 speed) either get a chip/reflash or just get a speedcal to calibrate your speedo.

Can he adjust the speedo with the dealers computer?
