im sure this topic has been beat to death but i have a few specific questions...i was thinking about 3.55s but i hear 3.73s are better all around gears so ive been leaning towards them.
-will i need to change my speedo gear for 373s? if so which one will i need to get?
- is 1st gear going to be useless with 373s?
-how high rpm @70mph?

my car is bone stock except for exhaust, its a t-5 with 3.08s.
thanks guys.

White 23 tooth gear for 3.73-4.10 gears OR get a Speed Cal.

1st gear is not TOTALLY useless. But, it does go by quick.

2306rpm @ 70mph in 5th gear.

In retrospect I wish I had gone with 4.10s. Better for drag racing.

Your speedometer will still be off when using the white 23-tooth gear, just not as much. Also, the gear is pretty fragile with so many teeth, it will shred relatively quickly. The SpeedCal is a better choice, you can keep your gear and the SpeedCal adjusts for the speed difference. 1st gear will definitely go by fast with either gear ratio.

I think 3.73's are the best mod I've done to my car thus far. Like mentioned, its around 2300 rpms at 70 mph. I changed to the white 23 tooth speedo gear, and its only off by about 2-3 mph at 70mph. 1st gear isn't useless but goes by quickly. Since my car is mostly a street car with maybe 6-8 track days a year, I chose the 3.73's over the 4.10's and I'm glad I did because I still retain decent cruising rpm's and pretty good gas mileage. I clocked between 23 and 24 mpg on my 900 mile trip from NJ to Savannah, Georgia cruising between 75 and 80 mph. For a 12 year old 113k mile V8, I'd say thats pretty damn good!

If you street drive and have few track days if any go 3:73 best mods hands down for a stock motor. A kid in my local club has 4:10's and I hope he plans some mods, I drove his car and he took mine, not to much difference if you have been driving around in 3:73 for a long time but the revs are higher and I think it pulls the stock motor out peak hp range, plus if you dot track it enough it's killer on the highway, rpm wise . 3:73 best mod for a stock motored T5 even with light mods or a supercharger.

3.73's are definitely the best mod on a stock powered car. I usually get 26mpg on my 400 mile trip to NY(cruising speed at 72mph) and around 20mpg city driving. If you don't take your car to the track very often, go 3.73's I've had the 23-tooth white speedo gear in my car for over a year now and it's still in great shape. Just my .02

I forgot to say I've put about 10K on my white gear in the past few years.

I've not looked at it but ... it seems to be working fine

Around town you will be off about 1 or 2 mph and on the highway about 3
or maybe 4 if you are going really fast.

you'll be fine with 3.73s if you don't race a lot, if you do, 4.10s is the way to go.

I gained 4 MPH in the 1/4 with 3.73's, and dropped .4 or .5 of a second

3.73's are perfect for street. I went 3.90's (again no track) with my H/C/I vert and they were great! Any higher would have been too high for street. Now I am back to 3.27's with my 414 b/c I am already blowing the tires off in first with 3.27's.

When my car was stock 373's were great, now that im making a decent amount of power 1st gear is worthless.

T5 will get more use out of the 373's but with my auto i need to swap in 327's or maybe even 308's, im running out of gear and can use the gas mileage

I daily drive my stang (5 speed) with 3.73's. I'm actually getting kinda tired of the high rpm's/driving in Houston traffic, and I want to put my stock 2.73's back in. I put about 15,000 miles on the gears, if you're interested in buying them from me let me know.

i think i'm one of the only people who wasnt impressed with 3:73 gear swap. yeah, they're ok, but i dont think its what they're hyped up to be. i went 2:73 to 3:73, and honestly, it wasn't as great as i was expecting. yeah it rev's a bit quicker, but i think i'd have been better to save a bit more, & spend the money on a h/c/i. now i'm sitting at 2500-2600 rpm at highway speeds. when i eventually get more mods, it will be too much. i wish i went with 3:55's, or no gear swap at all, and just went for a power adder.. just my 2c.

oh, i only installed the white 23 tooth gear(for 3:55's), but i think i needed a drive gear and driven gear for it to be accurate for 3:73's. i dont know why, but it's dead on for the 3:73's. i've had several friends drive beside me while i'm on the phone and find out how fast they are going, and its the same every time. not sure why, because i figured i'd be off by a bit....
