When I had my gears installed I was told that after the first 15-20 miles, to stop and let the Stang sit for an hour because the oil gets very hot. Then take it easy for the first 500 miles, after which you need to change out the gear oil to remove any metal particles. After that is when you are OK to get it on.......

stocks are fine with me

Maybe I'm just cheap or don't care to have a blazin' fast Stang, but the 3.27's are fine with me. Any gear ratio can be a "best"; it is solely dependent upon the application you are running.

My situation:
I drive 27 miles (one-way) to work with only 3 stoplights at the end of the drive (when I reach Omaha) with open Interstate with speeds around 75 to 85 mph consistently because of no traffic here at all. 4.10's would leave me filling up constantly or have me near or above 3,000 rpm for about an hour a day. 3.73's might be an option, but having my car relax at 2200 near the 80 mph mark is a nice place for fuel being $2.05 per gallon (and that is for the ethanol blend). I don't race, love all Mustangs, and feel that everyone here will have a personal opinion on this matter.

Gears are like golf clubs--there is a right time to use a certain one.

I would never even bother with anything less than 4.10s personally. 4.10s are completely fine for DD. And what's the big deal with snow and 4.10s? Your rear tires don't get slippery-er when you get 4.10s! Start out in second gear when you are driving in snow and it's all the same as with my stock 3.27s in first gear. Regardless of your rear gear, you obviously have to drive carefully, with a light throttle, and have good tires if you want to have anything resembling traction in the snow with mustangs.

It's just sort of amusing to me how some people think 4.10s make your car "uncontrollable" in rain or snow. In most cases, the only thing that makes your car uncontrollable is the driver.

One other negative about 3.73s - they put you right in the "drone zone" for most aftermarket exhaust systems if you like to cruise on the highway at 70-80mph. 4.10s slots you above the drone zone at those speeds.

Haven't driven in snow with 'em yet, but still --

Yeah, I agree, wish they were easier to switch in and out

I'll be going with 3.73s most likely myself. Glad you're happy with the choice.

If they are setup right there will be no issues beating on them from the get go.
Ive beat mine from the time (25k miles) i stalled them and for over 5 years(110K when i swapped to a IRS) i never had one issue out of them.

Also going to a higher gear will NOT cause more gear whine.Whine is caused by gear material and inproper setup.
Ive run 3:73's from n/a to blower ,ive always loved my 3:73s.

Why are all you people coming in here and spouting your opinions like its law? This thread wasnt to bash 4:10s, as I said above I would have got 4:10s but I did my research and they would not work with my future plans. Also my car isnt stock, I got to romp on it today and while not a huge difference compared to my friends 02 GT with similar bolt ons and 4:10s, it was an improvement and definately more fun to drive. The intent of this thread was to let others who may be in my situation know that these gears worked perfectly for me. Also I did a full tank on the highway today, lost about 8 miles on the tank, so at 80+ its just like 4:10s will sap you mileage a bit, but here in the city the limits around here and 3:73s go together like peanut butter and dentures (wich is a good thing unless you wear dentures, its funny to laugh at the denture wearers in a peanut butter incident) and thus my mileage has increased. Unfortunately with the addidtion of my cat-back any comparison between my previous miles per tank notes are no longer applicable so I can no longer get real gains or losses recorded.

Scroll to the bottom of this web page. It talks about the break-in period:

http://www.differentials.com/install.html#Gear Oil, Additive and Break-In

I'm sure lots of guys have been able to drive hard without the new gear break-in process but, all it takes is that one time when something went wrong and then your Stang is in the repair shop.......not tryin' to flame anyone here. Just tryin' to be helpful. In the end, its really up to you what you want to do.....

I'm glad everyone with the 3.73's are happy with 'em. I am too......

i don't know why every one keeps saying that they don't want 4.10's cause they have a blower in mind for the future,i had a procharged coupe with 410 and all you had to do is use 28x10 slicks so the taller tire can let you go trough the traps before redlining, all you need is a taller drag radial or slick and you'll be ok,im going with 4.10's and i have a bottle or boost in mind for later.

Well actually no, I would go about 5 miles to make sure it doesnt whine and to eat up the small amount of paint on the gears (may have a slight whine for the first few miles as it wears in the new patter), then romp on it. They are not going to get any stronger, and even if they did none of us have the power to bust them anyways. Take funny cars/strip only cars, do you think they take a 500 mile "trip" down the road to break their gears in? HECK NO. Gears are SUPER strong, usually if you dip into the 9s then you may need to worry. BTW drove 6-7 miles to a store and back(slight whine at first...paint prolly), let it set over night, hammered it that next morning on the way to work...and 0 whine along with 0 problems. That first test run it was just wearing in the pattern, and by the time I got home it was about gone...the next morning it was completely gone, so then I hit it.

Because the thread went from "I actually got gains in MPT" to Lower gears lose gas (might have well called me a liar). Then it went to Auto stuff, theres like 9 threads on gears for autos that actually have info in them other than 4:10's or bust, or 4:10s and you pay out the ass for gas...

Bottom line is 4:10s arent much worse than 3:73s as far as gas goes, and actually if I wasnt' planning on getting blown I'm begining to think that most of the drive to work 4:10s wouldnt even phase the mileage. The only reason I started a new thread was because my mileage increased.

BTW just as an update, I got 315 on my last tank (almost 14 gallons) city driving only thats way above my stock city driving best. Shame I'm using 91 now Also I got my newest low 123 miles on 12 gallons driving like an ass all over town and freeway. (Usually my in town and freeway is arouns 290-360)
