Hey everybody, Im trying to decide which gears I should get with my 89 fox. its a built carbd motor. AFR 165 heads, f 303 cam, 650 carb. KB pistons. 1.6 RR. etc. anyways its a t5 trans. In my last 5.0(1995) i had put in 3:73's and it felt pretty good. But people have different opinions about fox's. Anyways, my car was originally a 4 cyl. car so it has the stock 4 cyl gears... So what would you guys recommend. Thanks for all responses.

I think it depends on what you plan to do with the car. If you wil see a good bit of street driving I would recommend the 3:73's. I have 2 87 5.0's 1 coupe with 3:73's and 1 Convertible with 3:55's both cars have heads, E cams etc.
Mine are used for mostly street driving so I am quite happy with the 3:73 as a good compromise. My coupe has run in the high 13's at 101 mph with 3:73 gears and that was in total street trim (Yes I know the ET and speed don't match, tire spin). I drive the car 65 miles to the track go through tech and take a few passes during T&T nights. It may not sound like much, but i also will get into the car and drive 700 miles to FL with the A/C blowing and knock down 22MPG. I have flowmaster 2.5" 2 chamber exhaust and at highway speeds the drone does start to be a bit much on a long drive.

How much power does it have?

With increasing power levels, I suggest lower gearing. If you are over 300 rwhp, I would be debating 3.55 vs 3.73.

i have 3.73's and 3.55's already sound nicer for street driving without 300 to the wheels. once i get more power i'll likely make then move to 3.55's

i'd probably do the 3.55's first. my 1st and 2nd are almost useless except for roasting tires. my 3rd is nice and my 4th is even better. i love the length of being able to hit 40ish to nearly 100ish - not sure exactly of the mph numbers but its about that.

just something to think about before you decide, but do whatever works for you

no prob, maybe some1 here with similar power can speak on what gears they have to offer a first hand opinion.

i plan to make a youtube of a 3rd or 4th gear pull when i get new rear tires and my fronts balanced. i'll post it if you want when i do. there might already be some youtubes showing the gears tho.

the other option would be to punch the info into a calculator to see what your rpm/mph's would be with either gears.

Agree wish I went with 3.55's over the 3.73's but its all in hindsight. At the time it was the right decision with the power the car made.

YouTube - Mustang GT 5.0 1993 - 3rd gear pull 3.73 gears

i just did a 3rd gear pull from about 1900rpm 30mph

my speedo cable is wonky hence that jump from 40 to 60 it took but it catches again around 60+

still unsure how stock my car is tho, if anyone can comment on my 3rd gear pull it would be appreciated.

i need a mount so i dont have to hold the cam and the wheel at the same time

after watching some other pulls on youtube, it seems like my car is built stronger indeed

my heads must be ported, my intake honed, maybe 1.7 rr, etc.

i'd love if all i needed to do for power was headers back exhaust

i dont need huge power, its a street/daily but i def didnt want stock power either.
