I noticed on fords site that the new v-6 is now a 3.9 liter engine for 04, suposedly a 4.0 v6 is for the 05 model. why change engine for one single year???

It's the same engine as 99+, somehow they just got 0.1l in there extra. The '05 will be powered by a 4.0l V6, but this will be the Explorer engine.

thanks, i was wondering why they would upgrade an engine knowing they were going to do it again in 05. by the way, is that explorer v6 any thing like the ranger 4.0 v-6??

they are the same block but not the same engine. the 3.9 was developed for the freestar and ford carried it over to the stang.

3.80"X3.46" for the 3.9
3.81"X3.39" for the 3.8
bore and stroke.

the 3.9 should deliver better torque due the smaller bore and longer stroke but the difference would be small

it is a mistake for ford to go to the 4.0L engine in the stang. while a powerful engine it is stretched to the max and there is no room to increase displacement and the smallish block limits strength

the 4.0 is a decendant of the 2600 capri and 2800 pinto engine from the 70's known as the cologne engine from Cologne Germany. a V4 variant was made for Europe. these are not the strongest blocks and even though it has been converted to SOHC the heads still don't flow well. ford would have been better off using the 4.2 F-150 engine in the new stang until the 3.5L DOHC makes it's way into the stang

i would go with the 4.2, or you could just stroke the old 3.8 to a 4.2 since i believe that is all they really are.

just don't go of buying an 04 v6...the 3.9l engine will just through the performance parts market out of wack...there won't be any for it. I bet nearly no one will make a performance part just for a 1 year model v6 mustang.

More intake room? Huh?

Virtually every bolt on for a 99+ 3.8L will work on the 04 3.9L. It's only a small variation of the crank and rods make the difference. Other than that the engine is identical to a 3.8L.

SO don't get hung up on the .1L... it's the same motor in all other aspect.

Like said above, the new 05 stang GT will have a 4.6L not a 5.0L. The new 4.6L however has the 3 vavle heads from the new F-150 5.4L engine.

they also did it to compete with the 3.9L V6 that GM is putting out now (or will soon) and the Mustang prolly competes with some of those cars...

are you sure that the 3.9 will be exactly alike except for the small crank change. i know the old 2.8's ford made in the bronco II's and rangers were very different than the 2.9's they started putting in them at around 86 or so.

I'm certain. They are basically the exact same engine.
