ok....i saved this for last....my grandfather passed away the 19th of august....for those of you who don't know, he was like a father to me..
When I was asked to write an Eulogy for my grandfather i was more then honored, words can not describe who he
was, but I'll do my best. Jimmy C. Bird better known as "Papaw" is one of two grandfather's i was named after.
The other was Don Hill. I'm not gonna sit here and remember the past 6 months, instead i'm gonna go back in time.
Papaw was more then just a grandfather to me, he was like a father. Him and mema basically raised me since i
was 12 yrs old, so as everyone knows i'm practically the "4th" child. We were close. He was a very quiet man.
He never showed his emotions or feelings very much but if you knew him you could tell how much he cared for and
loved his family. He would sit in his favorite "chair" and watch TV for hours. You could come over and sit next to
him and try to have a conversation with him and if he was interested in the show you could forget a response until
commercial or it was over. But when he had something that he wanted to say, he wouldn't hesitate to say it. He
loved watching OU SOONERS football and Dallas Cowboys football. He wouldn't miss either's game, even if the
Sooners weren't on TV he would sit and listen to the game on the radio. While the game was on he would say
" they're getting their tails beat, or they'll loose", most of the time i think it was to get a rise out of me. He would talk
all that noise about them, but come next week guess where he was. Yep, right back on his chair watching them
play again. Me and him started a tradition about 9 yrs ago. We would sit together and watch the Sooners play
and if we wasn't able to watch it together I would call everytime the Sooners scored a touchdown, but when he
answered the phone and say "Touchdown" before i could even say a word. We would laugh and briefly talk
about the game and hangup the phone. Sometimes i would get to hit the redial within minutes and other times it
would take time, but he always had the phone next to him to answer the next time the Sooners scored. We had
planned on watching this years first Sooners game together, but now he'll watch it from Heaven. I would play like I
would crawl into his lap like i was a child again, he would laugh and try to push me away like i was too big or
something. He loved to build and collect model boats and cars. He was always supportive and loving of his family,
sometimes he didn't always agree with a desicion one of us made but he was always there when we needed him.
Like i stated before he wasn't the type to show his emotions, but a bond was there between us none the less. I never
had to tell him i loved him but he knew I did. I know i will always remember who he was and what he meant to me.
He was a mentor, a grandfather, and a father figure. He will be missed. I'm not telling him goodbye, I will see him
again. In Heaven.
