302 High Performance?

Alright, I bought my '66 coupe with a rebuilt 302 in it. I'm trying to figure out what exactly the motor is. Year wise, and code wise. It has a pair of valve covers and an air cleaner cover that all say 302 High-Performance. Is that an actual engine? like a 289 Hi-po? If so, is it just the 302 with 4v instead of 2v? I think it's from 1968, but I want to make sure. Can anyone help me in determining what motor I have? Thanks

Any 'cast-in' engineering numbers off the block or heads?

well, i thought to look for those, but i'm not aware of where they cast those lol. do you know where they are located?

Try to get underneath your car and you will be able to find them on the underside of the block back where the trans bolts up. I cant remeber which side they are on though, IIRC the drivers side. If your motor is pretty dirty you might have to scape some dirt off the see them all. The valve covers are mostly likely ones someone had bought and put on there since they are eaisly availbe from many companys.

alright, thanks for the help man. i'll go look for them right now.

i was just wondering about the valve covers and all that saying 302 High Performance, cuz i'd never really heard about a 302 hi-po...just a 289 hi-po..

The block has a part number cast into it in large numbers/letters, you know the drill...C9=1969 and D4=1974. It is near the pan rail by the starter. You may have to remove the starter to see it. This is not the manufacture-date stamps though. Those are easy to find on heads and manifolds, but I don't know where the date codes are on a block.

I've never heard of a 302 hi-po. probably just an aftermarket dress-up kit.

thats what i was leaning towards. I don't really care for the look of the covers anyhow lol, they're on the list of things to change. I looked for the codes but I couldn't find anything. I'll go look again

Maybe it's a roller motor out of a 5.0?

well the block is ford blue, and i remember awhile ago i looked at the intake's code(stock), and it was for like a '68 iirc. I still wanna know what the block is tho, but i can't find the frickin' casting number haha i'm blind.

If it's a 68 you will probably find a bunch of casting numbers starting with C8 although that part could have been used for years. You will probably have to remove the starter to get the actual block number. I think some 4v 302's came with a high performance sticker on the air cleaner, but there wasn't really any difference other than the carb and intake.

Do you have the valve cover decals....blue and silver that say "Ford 302 High Performance"? I bought some years ago and remember the vendor saying there was no such thing. Got them on my Granada..just for laughs.

lol, well they aren't decals. they are plastic type emblems that are stuck on em. it is blue and silver tho. i'm just wondering if there wasn't such a thing as a 302 hi-po...why even make valve covers and aircleaner cover with it saying that? lol seems stupid. now i want new ones

I think if you remove the valve covers (anyway) the casting numbers for the heads are cast above or below the valve spring seats. You should be able to read them without taking anything further apart.

I thought there was a 302 hi-po only in '68. Befor that (65-early 68) there was the 289 hi-po, after that (69-70) there was the BOSS 302.

thats what i thought, when i was looking at a site that listed all the mustang engines, year by year. There was a 2v 302 and 4v 302 in 1968. I figured maybe the 302 hi-po was the 4v version.
