So the time has come to swap a 4V intake onto my 302. I have a Ford factory aluminum 4V intake which i believe is off an 84 (E4) but the engine and heads are 74 (D4). When I got the intake gaskets there were two different sets in the package - one that matches the intake, and one that matches the heads. So my question is which gaskets do I use and is there anything that I'll have to block off on the heads or intake? Thanks for any help you can give me!

Should be the same size ports on both. Unless you lucked out and got a set of 351W heads on there. Is the coolant port on the head "L" shaped ? With an extra bolt hole there ?

DHearne, do you think I could use that same intake off the 84 Mustang with my swap. I am going to be using an Autolite 4100 carb. I would like to save the weight from the cast iron intake but don't know how big of a difference it would make. If I went with aluminum heads I am sure it would make a big difference but some is more than none right ? . I have manual steering which is why I am concerned about weight.

Nope, don't remember an "L" shaped coolant port. The heads are 302's and have a D4 part number. Thanks for your help!

The aluminum intake on a small block saves about 20 lbs. Heads, about 25 lbs each, if I remember correctly. You think your's is hard to steer? Try a big block Stang without P/S.

that intake should work but isn't the best choice. i would seriously look for a performer at least. also the factory aluminum intake is an egr unit. you might actually be better off using the cast intake.

Well I know it isn't the best choice but when you're a student and money is tight you take what you can get. The 302 is only in there until I can afford to rebuild the original engine so I don't want to sink a lot of money into it. Sure I could use the cast intake but the whole point of this thread is that I am switching from 2V to 4V! Also, the aluminum intake I have has an aftermarket spacer so there is no egr on it. Anybody else have any advice?

The intake gaskets are different from '76 (?) and up. You need to use the early ones that match the heads. If you use the later ones the cooling ports will leak at the front passenger side and rear driver's side. The newer gasket covers the edge of the port just enough that you can be fooled into thinking it is the right one untill you fill it up with coolant. I know this from experience.

Nope just a stock 2V on there that needs a rebuild anyway, so I figured I might as well swap. Anybody have a guess as to if I'll see an increase in power. I'm also using a Holley 4160 600cfm carb. Thanks

20 hp at most. About the same as bolting a Holley 500 on the 2 bbl intake. Keep your foot out of it and you might see an increase in fuel mileage.
