I'm debating on what flywheel to use with this engine i'm building. It'll be raced but nothing more serious than test and tune and romping on the back roads, so i don't know if an SFI approved flywheel is really necessary. I don't see it ever revving past 6500 RPM. I'd love to have an aluminum flywheel but i'm trying to stretch my funds as far as possible. So, my options are basically a billet steel flywheel off ebay for $120, or a cast iron stock replacement built by Zoom for $50 from the parts store. Is the $50 version really all that bad if i'm not going to be revving it to the moon or doing 6k clutch drops?

i'd go with the billet steel one, this is an area that you dont want to be cheap in though, there is alot riding on the balance of the flywheel, i.e. your motor staying together.

I think spec makes one that is pretty reasonable in price and they make good stuff. Aluminum flywheels are kind of rough on the street, ive got one in my car and starting from a dead stop can be kind of difficult, if i were to do it over again id get billet steel

No problems with my fidanza aluminum in my street only car. But yes they can be kinda pricey at 300 bucks a pop. You're building a 347 so a stock flywheel is not even an option.

Yeah i'm leaning for the billet steel version. I have one in my 302 now and it seems to be doing good...i mean it's not something that "sucks" until pieces of it fly through your trans tunnel

My buddy's car has an aluminum one, and with this huge cam, it takes some clutch trickery to get off a dead start without breaking the tires loose. But, the damn thing revs faster than anything i've ever driven.

I did the billet flywheel off Ebay for my 331. My engine shop machinist said it was a nice part. Has worked well since........
