I am about to start putting together my new motor. Please give your comments before it is too late. Most of the stuff is already here, manifold and carb are not choosen yet:
- D1ZM-6015-AA 302 Mexican block.
- M-6013-B347 Ford Racing stroker kit.
- M-6049-Y303 Ford Racing heads ( CR 10.3:1 )
- Compcams XE247 cam.
- Compcams lifters.
- Compcams Magnum roller rockers.
- Crane pointless disributor kit.
- Blaster coil.
- Edelbrock RPM Airgap manifold.
- Speed Demon 650 carb.
- Long headers + 2.5" exhaust.

I am not 100% sure about carb/manifold yet.

Why the racing heads? This is not a street driven car is it?

Is that an xe247 or 274? Heads seem a little small.

It should be XE274 ok. Heads are small, you are right. I am looking for a combo beetween crusing street and performance.

I think that it's fine choice but Why do not buy FMS kit ??

I've 332ci stroker and if I should re-begin again I would take FMS package with 351W :
http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=7092
(351W,475HP)
or
http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=6683
(351W, 385HP with a NOVI2000)

Do the best choice

Isn't that the motor that AFR took of the heads and put on their 185's and gained 75 hp ? Maybe you want just the shortblock ?

Both of these engines would almost double the budget compared to 347!!!
With 392 there is some sense, but M-6007-A351E is only 385hp/351 CID. My combo shoud do close the same with only 4 CID less, at least 15% lighter and 2000$ cheaper.

- Ford Racing stroker kit probably comes with non-forged pistons and is over-priced.
- Those Y303 turbo swirl heads aren't exactly high-performance and the valves aren't big enough to feed a 347 by any means; and they are pedestal mount. For $200 more you can get trickflow or similar heads and stud-mount roller rockers, which is worth it just for the ease of valve-train adjustment
- decide on everythng else, then call the cam manufacturer for a cam recommendation suited to your combo

I have a similar engine. I have the Ford Racing 347 short block. With the RPM airgap manifold and the xe247. Agent orange is right the FMS stroker has hypereutectic pistons and forged rods. Although, unless you're gonna juice it, I don't think the forged are necessary. I also agree with A. Orange in that you should definately go with some AFR or Trick Flow heads. There is no comparison. I have Edelbrocks and the thing runs like a raped ape but if I did it again I would go AFR. With Aluminum heads, I would shoot for about 10-10.5/1 compression. This way you could still run 92/93 octane gas.

IIRC the Y303 head CR rating (10.3:1) is based on 302 CID and Std stroke. With a 347 stoke kit and flat top pistons (Id go with forged BTW); your CR will be pushing close to 12:1. So you'll want to think bout that when choosing pistons and/or heads.

For a 347 to breath in the lower RPM's range the XE274 cam is designed for, you'll want something with 180 cc runners, 2.02/1.60 valves and definitely screw in studs. BTW, Magnum Roller Rockers are known to be noisy and are overpriced for what you get IMO. Better to go with some Crane Energizers, or Ford Racing stuff and put the savings toward the heads.

Why choose the Crane over the Pertronix? There are a lot of success stories with the Pertronix unit. I haven't heard much about the Crane kit.
