i'm new to the 351's.....i know 302's like the back of my hand but i'm a virgin to the 351's. i just dropped in my motor the other day and stuff isn't lining up!!

questions:

1. i got a sfi steel bellhousing i don't know if it is mcleoud or lakewood? anyway the flywheel is 164 tooth and the bellhousing backing plate that came with my tko tranny i got from some guy on corral.net. the problem i'm running into is the starter from my 302 isn't mating up to the backing plate? i talked to some guy and he said my 302 starter will work with that bellhousing b/c it has 2 different bolt holes one for a 157 tooth flywheel and one for a 164 tooth. it looks like the starter matches up to that but it's wayyyy off from lining up to the backing plate? do i need the actual backing plate made for the sfi bellhousing?

2. i tried using my 302 power steering bracket on my new motor and it will not line up either? the part that slides onto the front of the water pump works just fine but when i go and try and move the power steering to line it up it's off? is this b/c of the different deck height between the 2 blocks? do i need to go to the junk yard and find a 351w motor with a serpentine belt setup and use that bracket? my setup is like this....i have the crank pulley, alt. pulley on the left, water pump in the middle and power steering on the right (looking from the front of the car).

3. this is an easy one is the firing order 1-5-4 or 1-3-7?

4. is there anything else besides the questions here i might run into?

I don't know the first one but you P/S bracket won't work with both parts.Just use the little aluminum piece that go's to the head bolts and don't use the water pump mounted AC braket.Fireing order is same as a 302 H.O.The only other thing is check for steering shaft and hood clearance.

i don't have an a/c so i don't have any a/c bracket at all. just the one that bolts to the water pump and p/s.

i thought the firing order is the same as the older style 302's?

Well having the blowproof bell with out the thick blowproof blocking plate really defeats the purpose. Get the backing plate that matches your bell, and you should be able to use a stock 302 style mini starter. Lakewoods are red and stamped with the name and serial number...

Firing Order depends on the year if it is stock, or if the cam has been changed it could also determine what order you need. Can you give a little more detail about the motor?

P/S bracket for a 351w can be bought from Holcomb Motorsports.
Are you running Carb or EFI?

answers to ?'s

the motor is a 351w block stroked and poked out to a 393. it has a scat 9000 crank, with eagle 4340 h-beams, forged flat top ross pistons, 10.8:1 comp ratio, dart windsor sr heads, comp cams solid roller cam (264/272 @ .050" , .649"/.649" lift, with a 108 lsa). it's a carb. motor.

on the power steering bracket "racer walsh" in jacksonville has them so i got that taken care of. now all ineed to do is the bellhousing matching up and firing order.

so all lakewoods are red. and no mcleouds are red? b/c mine is solid red. there is an sfi sticker on it that says "sfi foundation inc." and has this number on it B012053. also this number 52378012053 is stamped/engraved into the bellhousing itself.

thanks,
guys

The PS bracket can be bought from Summit/Mustang Warehouse, etc... call them and tell them what you need and they will be able to help you out.
