373 Gear Install

Well I guess I'm the first one here...

Installing gears properly is one of those things you don't usually get the first time unless someone else is standing over you who does know it backwards and forwards. Getting the preload on the pinion, the ring gear sideshims, and finally the proper wear pattern correct can be pretty tough for the do-it-yourselfer. I do nearly all of my own repair work and I will be humbly handing my car keys to a local shop in a few weeks to have my own gears done.

Just consider the free gears a bonus towards paying a qualified shop do the labor. There is nothing more annoying than a howling rearend and a subsequently ruined set of differential gears. I would also strongly suggest having the track-lock rebuilt at the same time with new clutches if you don't buy a new differential: you can make it like new for about fifty bucks. The kit is available through Ford Racing under PN M-4700-B.

Congradulations on the new purchase, BTW. For what it's worth, a gear change is one of the best modifications you'll ever do to that car...have fun.

Just like the man said! It is worth having them done right the first time. Have the clutches replaced in the rear end and the inner and outer bearings replaced. Setting the backlash on the gear teeth is not the easiest thing to do for a 1st timer. Ask around to find the best shop and not the cheapest. I ran out of time to do my friends and the shop that did his the 1st time set them up wrong and we were replacing them inside of 6 months. A bad set up will chew the teeth all to hell. Shops don't always warranty this kind of work cause they know we rag pretty hard on our cars.

373's are a great gear. I have good acceleration and can still fly around on the highways!Good luck with the new stang,,stay away from nitrous or boost ( a least large amounts of it) 93's have hyper... pistons! P.S. You should spend the 200 for someone to install the gears! Its a very time consuming job,save yourself some aggrevation and get it done!!

It's a pain in the butt! If you don't know what you are doing, but want to try it, make sure you have someone with you to help with all the measuring, and that has the tools you'll need. I did mine with my stepfather's help, and it still took about 6 hours on the ground, but it was definitely worth it.
