373 gears, PI parts, dailey driver and petrol prices!

Hi guys/girlz,

im lookingat getting some 373 gears in my 98 model GT Muzzie, its pretty standard right now but im looking at gettnig the PI heads, cams, intake and logtubes, and i can get some 373 gears for a good price!

my questions are:

1) my car is my dailey driver, how much difference will the 373 gears affect my total milleage out of a tank of gas?? (as over here its about 45 pounds sterling to fill up, thats like 70 odd dollars a tank!) and at present i get about 280 miles out of a tank!

2)will putting the PI heads, cams, intake and longtubes affect my gas milleage by a drastic amount??? i dont mind losing a bit per tank as i expect to!

3) once ive done all the PI bits will i need to get the car remapped ( all the bits are off of a 2000 GT and mines a 98 MODEL GT

4) assuming i do the PI bits whilst the block is apart is there anythign else to do???

1. yes you will loose a tiny bit off your mileage. i have 4.10's but i did not notice much if any loss around town. but i did notice a few mpg on the highway.

kool cheers dude, most of my driving will be highway/motorway driving so i might not do the 373 gears?? how much difference is there mpg wise?? i might just get nitrous and then i can use it as and when i need to!

I have 4.10s, and I usually average about 29mpg...I dont know why I do so well, but it is up there. I wouldnt worry too much. I woould think that with 3.73s you would do a little better, but I would for sure get some gears in there. They are awesome!
About the PI swap..
You will need a few other parts, besides the intake ad heads, but it isnt too much hassle. Definitely worth it. I also put my L/Ts in when I did the headswap, good idea for that. I would also plan on getting it tuned after the headswap too. Mine ran all right, but was a lot better once it was tuned. Good luck!

I have 3.73's and also PI swapped. I lost @ 1 mpg on average. In the beginning you will lose more but this is because you will be MASHING the pedal because of the new power. After a few weeks you will get beck to normal driving. Also don't forget you will need to use Premium fuel.

There are a few parts you will need besides the heads/intake.
1. PI heater hose
2. PI water pump nipple
3. PI Alternator bracket...stock may be able to be manipulated.
4. Your going to need to get the timing cover bolts off of a Windsor PI. They are longer then the Romeo.

i had 3.73's in my 98 gt and i notice no difference in mileage, at the most .5mpg

I went from 3.08's to 3.73's. I picked up around 2 MPG in town and lost about 3 MPG on the highway.

Not sure about the mileage on the PI swap, I've only had it done for around 2 days, but jesus, what a difference. The NPI heads/cams/intake truly do suck.

90pence a litre over here! which is like $1.60 a litre!!

you are going to need head gaskets, head bolts,intake gaskets etc. you should be able to get a kit from a ford dealer.

BTW. when you do tighten down the head bolts. use the factory torque specs and sequence. do not do some hack stuff like 30-60-90. i have seen some people do this at my work on TTY bolts. if you want to make up your own torque specs and not stretch the bolts then just make it easier on yourself and just take the new heads and smash them into stuff and throw them away.

There are a few good write-ups on the net, also, I used the Chilton and Haynes manuals to walk me through everything. You will be fine. When I am across I can tell you exactly what you will need, and give you tips.

so if i did go just the stage 2 cam route, what sort of power increase would i get?? i would also get a custom map done, so waht do you reckon id get afterwards??

and what would be a good make of cams?

buy the heads dude... the higher cmopression ratio will benefit your car hugely..

MPH or VT cams are good, power output would be variable depending on compression ratio, headers/exhaust, other bolt-ons

if you do go for a stage 2 setup you have to upgrade the springs aswell
