Is it a roller motor? If so and you use a carb style distributor with a vacuum advance then you will need a gear made of Steel i believe. And a Bronze gear for flat tappet cams.
Best distributors you can get your hands on is the factory ones. Ive had issues with aftermarket stuff being machined poorly. What brand distributor do you have there?
Oh and get some fender aprons or a towel on that car. Those tools sitting on that beautiful paint made me cringe a lil.

I once bought a ProComp distributor. lol I got what i paid for. Matter of fact the shaft snapped too. I think you're onto something about that gear. The metal up top does look cast. a factory gear doesn't look like that. Do some of these companies even test their crap? Or do they just make it to look nice? lol...not to mention wearing any jewelry when working on an engine?
BTW, that gear looks like a cast gear. As others have mention, go to steel if that cam is billet. If unknown, at least, go with bronze.
