I trust jrichker's opinion as well, but I bought a brand new PA Performance alt a couple weeks ago and bought their 4 gauge power wire and fuse with it.
PA Performance ALSO said to connect the 2 black/orange wires to the alt. Why does everyone say to hook up these 2 wires when jrichker's point about frying wires makes complete sense?
I don't know, but PA was the ones that said I should use a 150 amp fuse for my 95 amp alternator. Which made no sense after looking at the specifications for the fuse. Jrinchker suggested the 100 amp and thats what I am using.
I hope there is enough bolt so that I can use the same ground point that the negative battery cable connects onto the block. This would be the easiest and quickest place to hook up to.
The alternator converts magnetism to electricity, and that coupled with the internal resistance of the alternator, makes heat. Unless it gets so hot that it sizzles when you spit on it, I wouldn't worry.
I just got done adding the 4awg ground wire and it does help. The volts stay higher as the accessories are turned on. I can't remember exactly what the voltage drops were before, but the lowest it got was 12.2 volts with brights, a/c, fan on, rear defroster, and stereo thumping. The biggest drop is when the a/c compressor is turned on.
Now I think I have done everything that is supposed to be done with the 3G to get the most out of it safely. Next on my list of to-do's is to get a 130 amp 3G, but no hurry
