3G alternator problem?

I'm doing a L6 to '82 302 conversion in my '67 and have run into an apparent wiring issue. I hooked up the late model Ford alternator w/ internal voltage regulator properly, I believe:

green/red wire to an ignition source
2 red/orange wires/yellow to a fuse and then the solenoid
white/black wires bridged
and a ground on the frame of the alt to the engine block

So I get this wired up, remove the old voltage regulator and its so far so good. Then I hook up the battery and it drains overnight and the alternator is warm. I've unhooked the alternator since and the battery holds a charge like it is supposed to so the problem has to be related somehow.

I have found quite a few threads with alternator wiring diagrams and so forth, but nothing detailing a problem of this sort. Thanks in advance for your help
