Our son recently graduated from the local police academy and has joined the local department. We are very proud of our son and wanted to something nice for him. We found an '05 Mustang owned by a local roofing company owner that rarely drove it. When we purchased it the car had only 7,861 miles on it. This was in early October. Last night my son called and asked for help as he was only the side of a busy highway with a major oil leak. When I arrived the was a large amount of oil under the car and under the hood. No oil was showing on the dipstick and he had only traveled about a quarter mile since he noticed smoke from under the hood.
It was almost dark when I arrived but I did have a small flashlight with me. I had him start the car for a brief period of time to look for the leak. Oil appears to be coming from the area of number two spark plug under a large amount of pressure. I haven't explored the problem further as it was getting quite late when we got his car home.
Now my question. I'm not familiar with the modular engines. I've worked on many pushrod engines and can't think of a reason why pressurized oil would be leaking from this area. Any ideas?
First thing to rule out is make sure the oil filter was installed properly.
It could have come loose or the original gasket could have stuck on the
holder. In other words there may be 2 gaskets instead of only the new one.
This is why I always do my own oil changes.
That was my first thought when he called me as he had just changed the oil the week before. The filter is tight thought and the leak appears to be coming from clser to the front of the block.
Turns out there were two gaskets on the filter. The old filter was hard to get off and somehow he missed the fact that the gasket didn't come off with the old filter. I'm amazed it took a week for the thing to leak. Somehow it sprayed out just right to bounce off the block and make me think it was leaking where it wasn't.
