Hey all,

Finally got my 4.10's installed on the stang.

They did not seem to hurt the cars drivability in any way.
(I was a bit concerned about 1st gear being too agressive)

I have noticed a great improvement in 3rd and 4th gear acceleration.
5th gear is really nice, no more lag.... just give it gas and it goes!

The not so good thing is the gear noise.
It has a considerable "whine" on both acceleration and deceleration.

Has anyone else experienced an increase in whine after installing new gears?
After a 50 mile drive it got better, but it is still not nearly as quiet as the originals.

did you buy FRPP gears or Motive? FRPP should have the least. The guy that installed mine works on stock cars and has done over 100 Mustangs. That said, he spent 4 days trying to get it right. He'd shim it a couple of thousandths, then put it all back together, and still have whine. It still has a small bit of whine, but not very much. With the intake and programmer, the engine is louder so unless I listen intently, I don't hear it.

I got a set of Ford Racing Gears installed in my automatic about 1 month ago...

From the day I drove to car out of the shop, these gears have been "as smooth as silk" with no noise at all...

If you purchased quality gears, then I would look to the installer for advise...

These gears (no matter what the ratio) should not give you any noticeable noise were accelerating or decelerating...

I have the Ford Racing 4.10s and the only thing noise i notice is the higher revving when cruising on the highway, but that was to be expected. I love 'em though.

I think mine have a hard spot in them. but Ford wanted us to pay to ship them back and blah blah blah they were big jerks about it. after shimming it 20 different times, I hardly have any noise, i mean it's super faint, you really REALLY have to listen for it... so I figured it wasn't worth the hassle.

FRPP 4.10's here and they're as quiet as the stock 3.55's were.

discofan, how do you like the 4.10's with the auto. I was thinking of doing the same thing but I was not sure to go with 3.73's or 4.10's. What gear is stock?

After all these posts, it looks like I should have went with Ford gears instead of Motive.

I intend to take the car back and get the guy to re-set them next week.

Anyone know where I can find pictures posted on the internet of the correct paint/marker pattern that should be made by the gears when we check the set up? I watched the process last time, and want to know what to look for this next time!

As for driving with the 4.10's.... not bad.
I need to re-flash the computer so the speedo will be correct to really get an accurate assesment.

Stock is 3.53, so you'll barely feel a difference with 3.73's. Don't fear the gear. 4.10's will do you well.

Yes, Motive gears have alot more likelyhood of gear whine than FRPP's. I'm taking mine back to my mechanic next week to check the crush sleeve. I think it's on too tight b/c after further inspection initiated by this post, it's not a whine I'm getting, it's a different noise. So I'm pretty sure it's the crush sleeve. So, I take that back. My FRPP's are not whining

Just installed 4.10's on my auto. About the same as stock when it comes to the gear whine.

I also just installed the C & L, Excal 2 Alternative auto tune, and absolutely love it.

What's your ETs with 4.10s? Is there a largely noticable difference in gas mileage? Thanks

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this, but remember that the new 'stangs have bigger wheel diameter than previous versions, and in some cases are rolling 20s and larger, so 4.10s are actually some what tame when you consider the overall diameter of the tire they're pushing.
