there is a guy on craigslist advertising a smoking deal on a set of gears......it is for a ford 8.8. but, he says it is for 2000-2004...the year does not matter as long as it is an 8.8 correct?

Make sure they are not Motives and they are actually FRPPs.

Correct, the year does not matter. An 8.8 ring and pinion will fit any year.

+1 on making sure they're FRRP as others could result in rear end noise in the '05+

I've got Motive gears.... the whine took only about 30k miles to go away.... but.
Hmmm. Maybe FRRP would have been better.

Make sure you have a good gear guy install them!!!
Someone with experience.

i have ford racing 4:10's that are brand new in my rear and they have some gear whine, i got it installed a steeda and they even tried another set of ford racing gears and that gear set made noise too. o well, they kick ass though.. that'd be awesome if my noise went away evenually lol.

That's odd, really odd that your FRPP gears whine. I've never seen a set, unless they were Motives, that whined. How much did Steeda charge you? I'm considering putting a set of 4.10s in my car but like high speed SCCA. I'll throw it in 3rd at 70 mph and it'll pull crazy. Do you think that's still possible with the 4.10s? Of course the RPMs are going to be higher. I'm worried that the power band won't be right.

A correctly setup quality gear set should make no noise.3.73 is a better choice and will keep the RPM's at a sane level at highway speeds .Be honest with yourself,if its 50-50 track and you'll run a drag radial or slick 4.10-4.30,if radial street tires and occasional track fun 3.73.Nobody wins a race laying down rubber on take off and gear changes.

I've had Motive gears in all my past Mustangs installed by my mechanic and none of them had gear whine. Mind you, I also had the gear kit installed on all of them as well. Maybe that's why I've never encountered it.

I just had 4.10's installed saturday and they are noise free. This was the first car that I had them installed and didn't do it myself. It was well worth the money to have them professionally installed. I used Ford Racing gears.

Late last year, I heard FRPP had switched to some sort of "chrome plated" ring and pinion and the same guy that installed my gears in Feb '07(mine was nearly the 30th S197 gear swap he had done and never had an issue...to date)was having all sorts of noise issues with almost all the newer FRPP gear sets.

+1 on paying a pro to do it if you're not sure on how to do it yourself or don't have the proper tools! It was well worth my $300 labor to have been very close to 40K miles of noise/trouble free driving with the 4.10s!

yup thats what steeda said they were pretty annoyed and felt bad that mine had made some noise i mean they even tried another gear set and same deal.

The guy was telling me just this past month almost every car they did w/ the new ford racing sets had some whine to them.

But hell my car is pretty loud anyway as it is w/ off-road pipe and flows not to mention nothing is wrong mechanically. but i dont even care about the noise when i floor it in 1st and slam into 2nd its just pure bliss w/ the 4:10's.

I can't wait when my track re-opens w/ the new surface in Oct.. Gunning for 12 sec passes.


but i recommend if you aren't serious about drag racing I'd stick with a 3:55/3:73 unless your serious about racing.

I hit 5th gear like all the time now lol. When normally i'd been in 4th.

The shop that put mine in was telling me how great the 4.10s are with the S197 and can even make everyday driving on the street fun. I completely agree as I've only gone to the track twice(made a total of 31 runs)and have racked up nearly 49K miles with the tune/CAI and gears! Being the automatic, the gas pedal can be very touchy, but I've learned all its sweet spots for various launches(from tire frying to "move it grandpa"). I've never had a problem of running out of gear at the track as I can cross the line at around 5500 RPM which still leaves another 1200 RPM(if you run a tune that high)in fourth. So I say you can be serious on daily driving fun and still live with 4.10s

I have seen the FRRP gears that said "Made in Italy" on the box. Those came with just the ring and pinion. The ones I bought just 3 weeks ago were "Made in the USA" and had a new pinion nut and pinion shims just like the gears from years ago that they used to sell. Maybe that is the difference?
