I just had my 4.10's installed last weeknd (BTW best mod ever!). I have driven it about 200 miles and have notice a slight whine under load from 56-64 mph. This is not a loud whine and probably wouldn't notice unless you know what you are listening for. Should I be concerned about this, or just leave it? I always had a whine on my 7.5" and 8.8" rear-ends on my old '98 v6, although it was much louder, and had no problems. What do you think, should I worry about this?

Ive had quite a bit of whine since having mine installed in November 05. Besides the whine, the car holds up fine to launches at the track, drives fine. If something should fail in the future, its just a reason to buy a beefed up rear end

sounds like the backlash wasn't set quite right. Nothing to really worry about. See if the installer will check it with a micrometer.

I've always had a slight whine/drone with mine also. My backlash was set perfectly at .011" (the spec is .008" to .015"). Mine happens at virtually the same speeds as yours.
Don't worry about it unless it starts to become more and more noticable.

You can set some gears up perfect and you'll still have a little whine in them.

I got lucky with this one.. no whine.. but others I have set up the same way has had a tiny bit of whine.

just to be on the safe side you can check and make sure the pinion still is preloaded by shaking the flange up and down and feeling for play.

Check the pinion for sure mine came a little loose on me guess I didn't tighten it tight enough to crush the crush sleeve. Retightened it and have no noise at all.

Oh yeah.....what was the pre-load on the pinion? The numbers are different depending on whether you used new bearings or re-used the existing bearings.

Mine had whine AND vibration (and no, I did not install them)...needless to say I ate up a gear set and had to have them replaced..I had the new set installed by a trusted shop, and the gears have a little bit of a "whisle" to them, but there is no vibration even at "higher speeds"

I took the car out last night. It does whine exactly between 56-64 like I said. It buggs the hell out of me just because it is in the range where highway driving takes place. Oh well, I'm going to have them looked at to make sure everything is tight.

It's probably normal.

If it bugs you now, don't do a rear seat delete. It gets VERY noticable when I pull my seats for the track.

Did you have them replace the bearings when the swapped the gears?

Don't wait to long to get it taken car of, other wise you'll ruin the gears and never be able to set it up right.

For those of you who have gears that whine-

Did you take it easy on them for a while or did you hammer on it right away?

I treated them the same way I treated the car when I bought it new.....I hammered on them straight away (immediately following a couple heat cycles)!
There is no break-in period for gears.

There isn't? Yeah o.k.

You've been mis informed. There is no such thing as heat cycles!

Whatever you say. You do what you do, and I'll do what I do. Chances are, neither of us will have a problem with our gears. This is off topic anyhow. Whether he babied them or not has nothing to do with his setup.

FAQ-http://www.jawsgear.net/store/catalog/faq.php

Even the guys I work with, some of which have 30+ years experience in the axle business say you should ALWAYS take it easy for a minimum of 200 before you hammer on a new set of gears.
