That's what someone explained me... on a slightly modded 5.0L, it would be better to go with 3.73 or 3.90 since the RPMs\HP curve isnt like the modular 4.6L, wich performs better with 4.10s...

Here, you can see, from a dyno'ed 4.6L with 4.10s, the green section shows the air bellow the curve where the 4.10s plays...

Anyone has a similar 5.0L tq\hp curve on a sliglthy or stock dynoed 95 GT ?
And what's your toughts on this ?

Thanks...

I'm sorry, i don't quite understand what the blue and green highlighting represents. Splain me?:)

Well if you did take advanced math class during college you should do.. it's the "air under the curve" Many principles and formula can emerge from that. Sadly, my english is too poor to explain it to you in details.

But, the green highlights represents where the 4.10s gear are playing and the blue one the stock gears on a 00 GT. That said, with the graph, you can see that the 4.10s plays in the peak RPM\HQ of the car. It's perfect for a 4.6L.

Buuuut, the 5.0L "stockish" motor doesnt have the same curves, so the guy told me the it would be better to get 3.73s or 3.90s since I heard our power curve is more "flat" and less "peaky" in the high-rpms range. Not sure if you understand what I mean, trying to do the best I can do. :Word: :)

To me, the most important thing would be ................
what are your future plans for the car?

The more serious the mods (h/c/i) the more suited steep gears become due to the power band being moved up and you usually rev it a bit higher :D

For a stocker ...... 410's may be too much for some folks!

You see some stock peeps cry about 373's being too steep as well.

i shifted my bolt on 2v at 5500rpms with 4.10s. the power band in my old car and in my 95 were pretty similar to be honest with you. at similar weights they are running the same ets roughly, i still havent really figured out where i need to shift the cobra though

i have 3.90s but i think 3.55s are a better choice.

with my 3.90s, yeah its a nice difference but i feel like car gets revved out too quick.

I have been in my friends bolt on 3.55 geared stang, and i love how it feels and everything. Still got the pull from a gear swap but his gears stretch out a bit longer than mine will.

And also something to consider, gears are overrated, yes they do help out alot buts its OMGOMGOGMOGM PLANT YOU IN THE SEAT like the are said to.

the change from 3.73s to 4.10s is a small one. its not like anything less that 4.10s will be crap and not be able to feel a thing.

Also, you run into traction issues with gears.
before my t5 swap i had the AOD and 3.90s and it was ok. But with the 5 speed the car likes to spin tires.....

Overall i think 3.55s or maybe even 3.73s are great choice. Still very streetable and wont kill you on the highway, plus you will have a more useful first gear. than say with 4.10s
I have 3.90s and i feel my first gear is useless.

.

you dont run into traction issues, you run into driver issues. with 4.10s i could cut 1.9s or better on street tires

Sorry, I still can't understand what you're saying.

I told myself I'd come back tommorow and read it again, hopefully with a new perspective. But, I still don't get it.

What do you mean by "plays"?

Even if the 3:90 ration is very good, just jump to the 4:10's (Ford Racing), the difference is MINIMUM and I also think you get the installation kit (bearings, friction stuff, etc) as well with the Ford.

To a fellow Quebecker :

T'es sure que c'est bon un 4.10s sur un 5.0L STOCK ? Comme un gars m'explique, le 5.0 n'a pas les mêmes peaks que le 4.6L et le shifting range du 4.10 avantage bcq plus un 4.6L qu'un 5.0L. Lui y me dit d'aller vers les 3.73 ou 3.90s
