4.6 motor question??

Bolt into what? 96-98 gt? If so yes. Just use all the covers and accessories from your car. You want to look for a 02+ or else you will have to buy an 8 bolt flywheel (urs is a 6 bolt).

Look for an explorer or mounty 4.6. Aluminum blocks and ur almost guaranteed it hasn't been hot rodded to bad.

I have a 96 and swapped in a 02 PI motor. Went in with no problem. I used the stock 96 fuel rails and swapped over the coil packs. The bracket for the pass side had to be modded due to the sep belt route but I havn't had any issues since the swap 3 years ago.

Someone (tunner) did tell me that the motor wouldn't last because the motor is running on a 96 tune where the 02 has a differnet tune but it still runs fine for me. I do need a tune and that will come this summer after I install the Bullitt intake.

You don't need a tune... It would help it run better but a tune will help a 02 gt run better too.. :stick:

ANY exploder/mounty with a 4.6 has an alum block. I found a 25k mile motor for 1k. :D

The last time I had it on a dyno, had a bad o2 sensor and ran 255hp / 298tq. My only modification is a steeda pullies, CAI, and plenum spacer. I still have my stock coil packs and return fuel system.

01 SHOULD be a 6 bolt flywheel. The only way to know for sure is to pull it and count the bolts. Your npi has 6 bolts.

Easiest way to pull the motor..... Hate to tell you but there is no easy way to do it. Just get in and pull chit.

Your car will run ok on the npi tune. But as stated above there is ALWAYS room for improvement on the stock tune. Its for emmisions and economy, not performance. I am still running on my npi tune and it runs just fine.

Double check the crown vic is a pi motor..... I don't know what years they started in vics. Easiest way to get a good guess is to look at the intake. If the runners go way down and almost touch the block then its a pi, if they are real short like your npi then you need to check casing #'s and such. It is possible to have a npi intake on the pi motor. Some early cars had them.

yeah i was told 01 + vics are PI. was just curious about the flywheel thing, 6 bolts . how long am i looking at, as far as doing the motor swap. i have lifts, jacks, airtools, and any other tool needed. just have a slight lack of knowledge. it can't be much t more difficult than taking out and putting in a transmission can it, or more difficult than doing the PI swap. anyways any tips or pointers are very appreciative. thanks for your help

If you can do a pi swap then you can do a motor swap.... Its litterally a bolt in...

It took me a full weekend and then a few nights b/c we had a few threads strip out (don't ask). It will take a lot longer to swap the front cover, oil filter housing, oil pan and pick up, cam covers and upper plenum/egr stuff, headers and such. Both motors DO have a 6 bolt flywheel so your ok there.

Good luck and keep us posted.
