4.6l transplant

Hello everyone,

I dont actually own a mustang and dont plan on buying one either. I would like to own a mustang, but I would rather not pay for the insurance. In my situation I either need a car thats cheap on gas but not insurance(read: celica or something with an i4) or the other way around. So I cant really own my dream car because its too expensive on ins. (for me) and pretty bad on gas. So I would like to know if there are any good cars that are considered "family cars" that dont weigh too much. I also need the car to be able to accept either a 4.6 or 5.0 pretty easily because I have limited resources. I read the contour weighs less but I am not sure if they will accept the engine. Any ideas are welcome.

i cant respond to that.

but if you wanted an easy swap... go with a 5.0 because the 4.6 is a very big motor.

How is the 4.6l larger than the 5.0. Do yoyu know any other forums that would be good to answer my question. BTW this is going to be my first car.

i think they say the 281 ='s the size of a 460 in width... if not wider.

Get a Focus, There light handle well, and it is possiable to transplant a 5.0l. They make a kit that converts it to rear wheel drive. Whatever you do dont get a contour, its one of fords worst cars and they are expensive to fix.

The focus is rather new so the prices on them are too high for me to get the car and a new engine and equipment. Thanks for the tip though, if I see one at a cheap price Ill definately keep in mind what you said.

get a fckus and leave the 4 banger in there intill you can afford to drop a 5.0 in ther

Go old school and buy an 87-93 mustang 4 banger, cheap car, fuel economy (If motor is in good shape), and the 5.0 engine is a strait bolt on. My $0.02

I will need to call my ins. company to find out about the i4 mustang. Just curious about the focus, where can I find the rwd conversion kit at, couldnt find it.

the 5.0 drop is anything but a bolton. but its fairly easy.

I saw a Focus 3 door with a supercharged cobra engine at SEMA. well since you low on budget the conversion alone will cost you dearly. The more realistic way is get a 93+ Mustang V6. the insurance on the V6's are cheap, and the swap is much easier to perform. It will cost you more if you get a family car ie. contour and do the swap. either way you'll be spending a few grand. how old are you anyways? are you really young and thats why your insurance is high? i'm 24 and i have a 02 gt and my monthly is only 145 full coverage.

I heard the 4.6 is 4 inches wider than the 427.

Get a lincoln mark VIII its got the dohc 4.6 motor, its damn quick and insurance i heard is pretty cheap, cause its owned by old people. they 96-98's make like 280 hp. you can get these cars for around 8 used.

otherwise do a 5.0 swap.

I will be turning 16 in three months so full coverage insurance would be insane. My brother who is 18, pays $180 a month for a Honda Accord. I still have alot of time to look but I had considered the v6 stangs but ruled it out figuring insurance would be alot. I will call the company tomorrow. Just how easy do you think it is to swap? Because if it is easy enough I might just go that way because the v6 models are pretty cheap. As for the markvIII I actually never even thought about one of those, 280 stock is nice but do you have any idea if they can be lightened up?

Oh yeah, I almost forgot where would you recommend I buy an engine.

a good source of 4.6 engine is kar kraft. if you never swapped an engine before, then you'll need all the help you can get. it's a good project but not recommended for the average home mechanic. you need tools, engine crane..etc. if you still can't afford it my advice to you is wait a few more years till you get older.

get a ranger and put a 5.0 in it.

All of these suggestions are great, but you are going to have to make a choice. Pay more now for the car you want or forget about getting a light car and dropping a fast motor in it. Don't get me wrong, you idea is great, but if you are worried about insurance, imagine the nightmare you will have if something happens to your V8 swapped car (ie. accident, theft, etc.) and you have to make a claim with insurance company and they find out you have that motor and not the 4cyl you registered. Trust me, it is not a pretty sight.

Well, really the only reason I am worried about insurance is because its mandatory. I actually inquired about a few cars at the insurance place today and Lo and Behold (I really dont know what that means but it sounds cool) the 1998 v6 mustang had higher premiums than a 1994 5.0l. Both are near $190 though so I figure Ill put a mustang on hold UNTILL IM 90 ! I never thought of the ranger though, would that be a difficult install? (I think I should add that I have a friend whos dad would help me, and he used to tune camaros back in the 70's so he could probably help me alot.) Could I actually get a ranger to go fast? If this sounds good I could probably get my Dad to help me out alot because he drives a miata and is always having to get stuff hauled.

The Ranger could be done. I saw a couple this weekend at a Fun Ford event that were running 13's and I think one ran 12's on the bottle.

What all needs to be done to get a Ranger to accept the v8. I am seriously considering doing this because the Rangers are pretty cheap in my area for a nice one. Also, what kind of mods did the guys running 13's have? Thanks alot
