4 cyl help!!

My roomate has a 4 cyl mustang and when he went to pull out of the gas station yesterday the car died and wouldn't crank. i've pretty much diagnosed it to the fuel system as i pulled a spark plug and it was firing. when he turns the key on i can't hear the pump turning on and i assume that you should just like the v8's. i'm up at school in atlanta and don't have any of my tools save for a couple wrenches and cheap ratchets so i don't have the resources to pull the tank out in a parking lot not to mention that the tank is slap full of gas. is it possible to put an in-line fuel pump on? never put one on when the other one wasn't working. always just boosters or on carb'ed cars. will this work? will it pull the gas throught the pump in the tank? any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

i think ya need to get a fuel pressure tester and see just how much fuel pressure its getting ? you should be able to rent one at autozone !


also when you pulled the plug what did it look like ? wet ? burnt ?

There is a switch in the trunk/hatch, I believe, that if switched on will shut off the fuel system to prevent more damage in an accident. Check and see if it's switched on.

simple check you can do is remove buttplug from timing cover on front of motor, and watch in there while cranking starter... does cam turn?

Might be the inertia switch. If not, the external pump idea I don't think will work because of how the system is set up. You need sufficient pressure to feed the injectors. Optional tip, take it or leave it... The in tank pump is mounted inside the passenger side of the tank. Try rapping on that side of the tank with the ignition switch on with a rubber hammer. Sometimes it's enough to get the pump going for a short time.

OK, need to know if it is EFI or Carbed. if it is EFI more than likely the pump is in the tank. If it is carbed more than likely it is on the block below the distributer.
The fuel pumps are not always that loud.

On the EFI first open up the back and find the "Inertia Switch" push that button back in and see if the car starts. I have had a couple issues with these, especially if you throw something in the trunk.

Also, how old is the Fuel Filter? this may of decided to clog itself. and may need a new one.

we checked the inirtia switch, pushed it and nothing. is there a good way to check to see if the pump is working and it's a connection problem or something?

you can always try to hardwire the pump straight to the battery and see if it turns on then.

that way you'll at least know it's good or not.

thats kinda what i was getting at. where would the power wire be? in the trunk? on the back of the gas tank? guess this is going to be my next step.

The power wire comes out the top passenger side of the tank...it is attached to the frame rail near the filler tube...

there is a realy under ur drivers seat. My pump stopped workin one day so i put a new pump in it and it still didnt work then i changed the relay someone might have already said that tho i dunno just throwin ideas

What I did when my car was having issues was I pulled the hose going from the fuel pump to the filter and got a guy to turn the key to the on position so that the pump pumps.

If gas squirts you in the face then your pump is still good. If not, then go from there. Filter would probably be the next thing I would try.

See if it has fuel pressure BEFORE dicking around with everything.

If you refuse to get a gauge, at least remove the schraeder valve cap and poke a skinny metal object into the valve.

Fuel pressure at the rail? Then the engine didn't stop because of the pump.

spark plugs don't fire if the timing belt is broken...

My bets are on the fuel pump relay.

Check the original post. It was firing when he checked the engine. Timing belt can't be broken if the plugs are firing.
