460 in 5.0 wont start for the life of me!!

Hey Smock, how ya doin. I see you're having some big block troubles. i have a 466 in my 1991 fox incase you forgot. Dont forget you're trying to turn a lot of rotating mass, more than a little 302, and even with only 9:1 comp. thats still too much for a stock 302 starter to try and turn. I invested in a powermaster high torque mini starter thats good up to 12:1 comp for my 466. It was over$100 from summit but well worth it.

Ok, Im back. Actually 2 of the starters I tried were brand new 460 starters so I thought of that already. Well I dropped $550 on a centerforce 176 flywheel and a Powermaster starter, also 176. Had to pull the whole drivetrain out again. Mind you I do all this by myself in a small garage with no AC and only 2 lights. Not sure if this was the cause of the problem but I feel more comfortable not using an Ebay flywheel with a weird tooth count. Remind me to count that thing sometime. Got everything back in and bought a brand new Optima drycell. The thing turns over like a champ. Now I have to fill the carb with gas and double check to make sure the ignition is working before starting the motor. The crappiest part of all this. Not having an extra yoke to plug up the tranny. Just wasted a whole tranny full of Synchromesh. That crap aint cheap. So I need that, refill the coolant, add last quart of oil, and check for spark and gas. Got a sure fire way to check for spark without using the old screwdriver to block trick?? I want to make sure this thing fires right up. Starting with 10* timing.

I havent met anyone on here with a 460 and Tremec so lets hope for the best cause Im kinda on my own with this one. In case you are wondering the crank was already set up for pilot bearing, Bellhousing is lakewood, only that will work, 176 tooth ford powermaster starter, TKO600 trans, prothane tremec tranny mount, stock crossmember pushed all the way back, unmodified Ford racing aluminum driveshaft which barely fits cause the 460 moves the tranny back, regular 302 adjustable clutch cable and regular speedo cable and gear. Also, shifter is in stock location so dont worry about that. Let me know if you want to know anything else since this is a pretty rare or new combo on these boards. I think its a worthy one because the TKO has overdrive which should regain gas mileage everybody *****es about when they talk 460s. Also, the trannys are rated to 600 ft/lbs so its plenty strong for a street 460. The motor is ass tight to the firewall, but there is plenty of room up front, but mount the fan in front of the radiator unless its really skinny. I was able to reuse 85 carbed fuel lines without modding, with 82 hood scoop it should fit under the stock hood. I must say the Lakewood bellhousing is a horrible design though!!! First, they dont clearance around the mounting bolts, so forget about using sockets, only wrenches, so install the bell and starter before installing the motor. Secondly, the mounting hole for the clutch cable to slide through was too small and I had to drill it out. Third, there is no way to fit exhaust around the wide lip of the housing without grinding so forget about it being SFI anymore, lol. This was suppose to be specifically designed for this conversion into a Fox but it blows. Probably no research went into this at all. Im also using stock manifolds so I cant even dare to say if this would have worked with headers. Best to install everything as one whole unit with tranny and use a tilter with your picker. You dont need to have the car on jacks but make sure you have plenty of ceiling cause the hoist gets pretty high.

Smock, what are your ET goals for this car? I dont know if a BB 5 speed car will ever hook, but it will be fun trying. Might want to check into minitubing before it is all over.

Lucky you to have a garage. I work on my uncovered driveway to fight the mosquitos, leaves and the cops (too many tools out).

I have solid adjustable uppers with spherical bushings and Megabite Jr lowers, lakewood shocks, eibach springs and an Auburn pro diff for the rear end. Oh yeah, and mickeys. No real goals, its a street car, I'll be able to feel if its running 12s or not. I just love the feel of a BB stick and I miss that feeling from my 69 SST Javelin that I sold. Its more of an experiment to see if I could do it. It should have been finished a long time ago, and its not going to be near as powerful as the 516 rwhp I was making with the blown 342. To be honest, if I could do it again, I would have stuck with the previous combo but with AFR 185s, Ed Curtis cam and a good aftermarket block. The numbers would have been mind blowing. It easily would have mustered 650 plus at the wheels with the same amount of boost. The 516 I was making was with an X303 cam, box stock TW heads, and 12 lbs of boost. And those numbers were coming in before 5000 rpms. Oh well right? G'night folks.
