Gents, i am comming up on my 30K Scheduled Maintenance i was wondering if i should change the fluids in my tranny and filter for it.

Does anyone know the fluid capacity for the 4R70W i believe it was 13.9 Quarts

How do you guys feel about Royal Purple MAX ATF ?

What types of Transmisson filters would you guys recommend i believe i need a gasket also should i be able to purchase these at the local auto shop?

get the trans filter at any local parts shop.

make sure that any fluid u use is rated for Mercon V. i dont think that RP is rated for that.

The Royal Purple Web site claims.

"Max ATF® significantly reduces heat to extend the life of your transmission and is recommended for all automatic transmissions requiring Ford Mercon® or GM Dexron® III transmission fluids."

Does that make sense is that the Mercon i want ?

no thats the incorrect fluid. you need a Mercon V spec fluid. Mobil 1 ATF has been recently rated for Mercon V, as well as Amsoil ATF.

if you use a generic Mercon spec fluid you will have increase chatter from the torque converter. also adding an addative to the fluid to make it a mercon v will not do it. dropping 4oz of fluid into 4 gallons does not magicaly change the chemical properties of the fluid.

some things you might want to consider while you have the pan off, is to put in a drain plug, or switch to this drain pan F8UZ-7A194-AA. its a factory 4r70w pan with a plug in it. for a lot longer trans life, add an auxillary cooler. they also sell remote filter kits that add a spin on filter to the cooler lines.

I honestly wouldn't do a thing till 60k miles. I rarely use Max ATF at work and most people that do use it end up coming back and complaining about it. Mercon V is probably the best fluid to use in a auto tranny, you can find it anywhere and in several name brands that you may care for. Never had a car come back with problems after a Mercon V flush, but I have with other fluids. Professional opinion and experience

Ford says replace trans fluid around 30k so that's when I do it. The filter you can get at any parts store. As for the fluid 13.9 if doing a whole fluid replacement, 5 quarts if just replacing the filter. *Ford calls for Mercon V. *Mercon V *is a premium-quality automatic transmission fluid designed, engineered and recommended by Ford Motor Company , it is manufactured with high-viscosity index, premium-quality, hydroprocessed base oils and specially designed performance additives, which provide excellent shifting characteristics at high and low ambient temperatures, excellent thermal and oxidation resistance and good low temperature fluidity. It provides wear protection and inhibits the formation of gum, sludge, lacquer and foam. It also provides protection against rust and corrosion. It is dyed red for ease of leak detection. *Using anything other then mercon v will lower the life of your tranny. *

If it says Use Mercon V ...then you USE Mercon V. Any vehicle that specifies just Mercon or Dexron II/III can also use Mercon V. BUT it is NOT the other way around. You cannot use just Mercon in a Mercon V type application. Mercon V is an improved Mercon/Dexron III fluid. It will improve the life of trannys that specify Mercon or Dexron II/III. This is why you cannot use just standard Mercon fluid in a type V applocation. The newer trannys are designed for the type V fluid. Using a lower class fluid is liable to cause excessive foaming, shift problems, and/or premature tranny failure. Doing so will void your factory 36k warranty (if still applicable).

And just FYI , DONT use type F either. This is a totally different type of fluid meant for much older vehicles that were rated for it. Putting this stuff in your tranny would almost certainly lead to instant problems
