I would not necessarily have expected the replacement of the AIR system hoses to help the issue (people remove that crap and often note no difference in performance. This sounds good. We're assuming your teacher has a real scanner (not a code reader). You'll be able to view real-time PIDs. The data-link cable should be long enough that if you roll down the window and snake the cable through the rubber around the hood hinge, you can put the scanner in your teacher's lap while you drive around a parking lot. He can capture the data when it acts up and see what's going on. Check your plugs, they could be bunged up and/or cracked, and if you're running platinums, get rid of'em...
might seem like too simple of an answer, but check it out, because my car was running horribly slowly until I did a complete tuneup and found that my platinum plugs were destroyed...Champion plugs (15 bucks) solved my problem.

Good call on getting your own reader. I use a jumper wire and do it for free, but if buying a reader, the LCD screen version would be my choice.
