I did something similar. Worked great.

I don't believe they came red from the factory. Used acetone to remove the blue paint the previous owner had used on mine.

I used that stuff to get off the 4x4 stickers and some other misc. stickers that were on my truck when I went to do paint and body work. I didn't know how good that stuff worked, I ended up eating completely through the paint! Which was actually awesome, because that was less sanding I had to do

The lump of metal sticking off the right side (throttle cable bracket boss) can be cut off and ground into the fins, as though it was never there. Cleans up the looks very nice... Not that you don't have it looking great anyway.
What did you do to the valve covers?
It appears they were media blasted... Did you use any paint on them?

The Argent pony wheel paint is a decent match to the factory intake/valve cover color.

I painted, wet sanded, and polished mine. Turned out pretty nice and really wasn't that hard.
Before and after....
