Howdy guys and girls
I have a 5.0 which I installed new oil pump and now I'm struggling because of the oil pump drive shaft seems to be too short...
If I try to install shaft with safety washer in original position, the shaft is not reaching the pump at all.
New shaft supplied with pump and oil pan kit was exactly the same lenght as original so I would guess there is nothing wrong with that.
I guess the shaft should be installed from above,at least that has been the way in every other Fords I've been working on...??
Have anyone else faced this kind of a problem??
Thanks already for your help.

If you put that shaft in w/out the washer on it the first time you pull your distributor off your gonna hear a *plunk* in your oilpan .... which will be your pump shaft. The pump shaft sandwiches itself between the pump and the block thats why the washer is on there, to keep the shaft from pulling up through that hole.

If I remember correctly, it's called a "Tinnerman" washer, and it goes on the driveshaft between the oil pump and the block, about an inch from the bottom. Thus, you have to install the oil pump driveshaft from below.

These guys are right.

You technically could install it from above, but when you ever mess with your distributor or timing it, it is very likely to just pull out of the pump and you will have to pull the engine with almost 100% certainty.

You want the washer far enough way so it does not "run" along the block, but also close enough so it will not pull the oil pump shaft out of its housing.

Leave the washer on. Just slide the washer far enough down the pump driveshaft with a pliers to allow you to slip the shaft up through the hole that houses the bottom of the distributor, and then drop the bottom into the pump. Then simply slide the washer up close (but not touching) the bottom of the area that houses the dizzy bottom. If you slide it up too far, normally when reinstalling the distributor, the bottom of the dizzy will push the washer down anyway.

Thanks guys.
It seems that I'll go without washer for now. Engine is already in place and I managed to get distributor in place ok.
This engine is almost stock so I would think we're gonna take it out after one summer anyway, might be boring on the straights...

If by chance didn't get it timed correctly and have to pick up the dizzy to restab it you'll be back to square one.

If you lose the washer, jiggle your dizzy before you yank it out to try and break the shaft loose. There suppossed to go in from the bottom with the oil pan off. Myn wouldn't go with the washer so I ripped it off, got lucky that I didn't drop her in the pan and got my car timed in.

I can't imagine putting it in from the top for any reason, you KNOW that at the worst possible moment, when your car has to run, you or someone else is going to pull your dizzy and clink, you are stranded. If your timing is not right and you have to restab, if your lower intake starts leaking(common as hell)becasue someone used the gaskets....I forsee a thread in your future entitled, "any way to get the oil pump driveshaft out of my oilpan without pulling the motor?"

good luck
