$550 for brake repair, sound right??

Ok. Turns out the grinding sound i'v been ignoring on my stang for a while was actually due to having know brake pad left in the back. So, my back drivers side rotor needs to be replaced and all 4 pads need to be replaced. I was quoted $550 for parts and labor. Sound right? Or can i get parts online for cheaper?

If you have to replace the rear rotors and all 4 pads then it sounds about right. It costs more when you have to replace the rotors.

no that is a little high i have had 4 cross drilled and slotted rotors put on with brakes all around and it only costed me like 430

It depends where you go to have them fixed. Some places charge like $70-$80 per hour. A full 4 rotor and full brake pad brake job on these cars can cost up to $800.

i only need to replace ONE rear rotor. Now, if it was going with no brake pad, and it ruined the rotor, would it have ruined the caliper too? I dident talk much to the guy at the shop, so i dont remember if he said i needed a new caliper or not.

Do yourself a favor, it is always best to replace the rotors in pairs.

how come? The car only has 15K miles on it, the other rotots are perfect

you always do pads in axle sets and rotors in pairs. the other rotor could be thinner or have damage that you cant see. the only time i could see not replacing the rotors in pairs is if the car has less than 500 miles on the rotors. in another 15k miles the other rotor might need to be replaced and they will want to do both then too. see if you can get a list of the parts prices and than go to tirerack or whereever and compare the prices, but remember that a lot of shops wont install a part unless they provide it.

I bought cross-drilled rotors and pads for $600 for my cougar. Installed myself (piece of cake) and haven't ever done anything "major" like this. I think it's a bit high. I'd find out how much labor is going to be.

sorry if this sounds stupid, but on a newer 94+ stang, when you do the front brakes do you also have to do the bearings, not necessarily replace them, but repack them like on a crown vic or the fox body stangs. cause i could see someone not wanting to do that at home.

Considering you could go to NAPA, get a new rotor and lifetime pads for front/rear and install all of it in about 3 hours for under $200...I'd say $550 is way too much.

Then again, I don't let anyone work on my car...

If it costs that much...just get a bullet or 03 cobra brake kit and replace your stock rotors and brake pads. Improve your braking and all new brakes for near the same cost.

I'm with him Go with the upgrade, you won't spend much more and you will have a better brake kit....

Agreed rotors arent that much, heck get a low mileage one from stangparts.com $20 and buy your pads at autozone and do the whole job for under $100.

We have 2 places in town "just brakes" and "valu brakes" they do a 4 wheel brake job for $100. Includes parts labor and turning rotors and packing bearing is applicable. Ive had my truck, my wifes stang, and my dodge done there and never had a problem. I used to do my own brakes but for $100 its not worth it.
