Anyone ever fit 6.5's behind the factory door speaker grills? I'd imagine they'd have to be slim (maybe 2" deep or less?).

Yes, and they do need to be pretty slim or else your windows don't roll down properly. I THINK you can go to 2.25 inches and stay clear.

The speakers I was looking at are 2.25" deep. I know I can cut through the factory speaker cover and mount speakers, but I want to keep the stock look.

I'll measure the stock speaker and that should give me some idea what will fit.

Stock replacement is 6.5 inch but yes you'll have to be a little careful which speaker you buy, nothing with big cast-aluminum baskets.
