6-SPEED in the 69 stang

i have a question and im not sure where to post it due to it being complex... first off.. i am going to be installing a overdrive transmission in my 69 mustang i am going to use a 408 stroker.. ok... with that said... i have a chance to get my hands on a VIPER T-56 6 speed race transmission for a great price. i know that the vipers and mustang cobras use the same gearing and case but will the input shaft and everything bolt up to my small block ford????

if anyone knows if this is possible PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

another way to look at it... go ahead and get it to see if it works. If it doesn't, you could more than likely sell it for more if you are in fact getting a really good deal. Then you could take that money and buy the tranny you need.

You'll probably have better luck in the 5.0 forums with this question.

I know it's fairly common for guys to use the viper transmissions, just don't know what's involved with the swap. I'm guessing input shaft and bellhousing will need to be swapped.

I think Latamud? has one in his car. I have not seen him post lately, but you may be able to contact him through stangnet.
What is the ratio for 6th gear? How would a big cam and carb act with a lot of overdrive? I would not think you would want cruise rpm below 2200 with a healthy motor.

im tired of of my auto tranns i want to put a 6speed in my 67 will the t-56 bolt up to ford bigblock?

I thought you had to do some tranny tunnel cutting to fit the T56 in anything before '71; but I don't have the experience to say for sure.
The one successful "6-speed in an early Stang" guy I know of is gp001; although he used a Richmond 6-speed. Really nice job;as you'll see if you check out his webpage.

The T56 from a Viper can be used in a Ford as they are the same trans. You need to change the input shaft on the trans and I THINK you need to change the front bearing retainer. Get the Viper trans because it is a stronger trans with more favorable gear ratios then the ones that were put into the late model Cobras. The hardest part is to get the correct bellhousing to mate the trans with the block. Ask around in the 5.0 section about this.

D and D transmissions have the kit to sway everything over to get the transmission to work with a small block ford.. the good news is they are only about 45 minutes away from me... the input shaft needs to be switched along with the bell housing and tail housing.. the bad news is its only $2200 but it comes with the correct transmission crossmember.. so i can get the trans for about 1500 new and swap parts... with the kit. the input shaft costs $400 and the bell housing costs about $450 i have a crossmember that will work soooo now i have to make the executive decision......

Make sure that the shifter is going to end up in the right place. The stock length is too far back, but after swapping input shafts that problem may be solved... but I would check with D&D to make sure before I laid down that much money.

I would find out if they are using a stock input shaft for a late model model
Mustang or if they are using some sort of custom piece. That is an expensive input shaft IMO.

Actually you have to cut/modify the tunnel on a '71 stang as well. Here's a link to Ford Muscle, they installed a Viper T-56 in a '71 'stang.
