Budget build...need to replace both quarters on a 65 fastback. I've heard i can use 65-66 coupe skins but a few manufacturers dont fully recommend it. What gives stangnet?
I wouldn't. You end up with six feet of welding you don't need, and the problems associated with having that weld where there should be none. Better you should just get a fastback quarter and be done with it.
If you are doing a budget build it is much easier and better to go with a 3 qtr panel. Ill send more pics when I find them but the reason I say this is the original steel is thicker and and will benefit you by leaving as much of it as you can in place so dont cut off good steel if you dont have to. next when you go the do your seam coverage (skim coat of body filler) its easier to blend on the panel surface (with an airfile)than it is roof line and resealing seam above the trunk. Now if it was a restoration and you want to keep originality for future sales then I would tend to agree with 2+2gt
One drawback to the true panel is you have to remove the rear window. I have to anyway, though, I also need a headliner. Of course, there is actually more welding involved in replacing only part of the panel.
It's usually easier (and arguably better) to replace a panel at the same attachement points as the factory used, not only for looks, but for strength also. Nothing wrong with a partial quarter installation, but using the factory spot welds takes the heat away from the crown, or center of the panel, minimizing warpage and distortion that you'll have to recreate with filler. Either way it's a big job, and although it may cost more for complete panels, you'll save it in "time" investment, just like if you get partial "skins" for less money, you 'll spend more time installing them, finishing the welds, and prepping for paint with fillers, primers , etc... It's a hard ($$$)decision, but in my opinion, it's best to go with full panels, and save money somewhere else.
