My 65 fastback has some rust in the frame rails, being as I`m installing a V-8 from a 6 cyl, I think I need to add some steel to the rails. We are gonna cut out the rust and put new steel in its place.:SNSign:

We are adding subframe connectors and we have cut some 1/4 inch steel plate to weld onto the existing frame rails, has anyone out there tried this? What do I need to watch out for, I`m not a welder, but my buddy doing it is, we are using a mig welder.

I did this my first time around, the original is really only 16 ga or at most 14 ga. Dont use the quarter inch, weld in some 16ga. menards sells it and it is much more workable. for 8 bucks you can have enough to patch all your rust spots. I have done it to my car and my uncles jeep both with great results.

All those pieces are available, do it right the first time...
If you don't want to change out the whole framerail (recommended) buy a replacement and only use what you need. I think this would look much nicer than 1/4" plate :nice:

I dont have pics yet

We are going to slice the bad out and put the heavier steel up into the frame rail and weld it in, it will look like it does now, but more meat in the rails so to speak.

I lost the cord to my computer from the camera, so cant get pics yet, but soon I will be able to.

The rust is under the front floorpans on the rails just before they start up the firewall. Its mainly on the bottom of the rails facing the road. The welder said cut the bad out and either put in new plate or fill it in with the mig welder (440 Volt monster welder).

Thanks guys.

Frame rails are fixed.

They look awesome, you`d have to look REAL close to even know they`ve been welded, only place you can even see the welds is laying under the car from the tranny tunnel. We stuck on the subframe connectors though, one side went fine, couldn`t get the eye bolt outta one side, its stuck.....
