65 Mustang Floor Question...

Hi guys, I just recently got a look at a 65 I'm thinking about buying as a project. We put it up on a lift and had a look underneath and so I have a question.

The floors are solid inside, but when you look at underneath there is an outer sheet metal shell I guess you could say that is rotting. Then the actual floor is up inside behind that. So if your under the car, there is the sheet metal shell and then you can look up through the holes and see the floor of the car.

I hope I'm describing this properly.

If I buy floor pans will I get both or is this another layer that has to be welded in?

Any insight would be appreciated.

the floors are single layer. it sounds like someone has layed patch panels over the old rotten floor from the inside. a quick fix. i would replace the floor.

Yea, thats what I thought. Now that I've looked at the floor panels online, I'll have to look at it again and determine what is the original floor the outside layer or the inside.

your wellcome. the out side layer is probably the origional ,if it is rotted and you cant see a patch overlap. Jim

There's at least a couple inches between the layers, so I'm wondering how they did this? The mechanic told me he thought they put a whole new floor in.

Unless they put a floor in on top of the old one, it seems really odd when you look at it.

is it just a flat piece of sheet metal on the top inside layer?

It doesn't matter. From your description, it's all crap and 100% of it needs to be removed and replaced. The above photo shows a new one-piece floor, which is what you should do.

Yea that is the way I will go for sure. As far as the pic, I can't see it from inside the car. I'm only looking at it from under the car on a lift. The car has it's full interior still. So we'll see.

it sounds like your looking through the holes where you access the seats mounts and what your seeing it the bottom of the seat pan- the square bumps you see on the floor above.

That could be, I'll have to look at it again and see where this spot is in relation to the doors. I thought it was around the rear seat area, but I could be wrong. If it's right in the middle of the doors you may be right. This would be good, that means it never had floors and I don't have 2 issues to deal with.

there will be 4 holes in the bottom of the floor ,on each side .they are the seat nut access holes.
if you are looking through those ,you are looking at the bottom of the seat riser.

I'm actually looking through a rust hole about the size of a softball that is just forward of the rear holes if I remember correctly.
