65 mustang, front coil spring cover

I have a 65 mustang, my question is do you need to keep that piece inside of the front fender that covers the spring. I want to get rid of it because then i can fill in the holes on the engine compartment side, so it will look cleaner. Does that piece do anything, does it support anything? Can i just get rid of it completely?

Would I do it? Not likely. Structural integrity comes to mind. If you were to remove this piece I think down the road you might find some cracks in your shock tower or on your inner fenders. Also that is the piece that your rubber bumpstop mounts to. I personally would not sacrifice the structural integrity for the cosmetic gain!

What about welding studs in place of the screws? That would clean up the engine compartment and let you keep the cover.

I totally agree with Big Daddy. The engineers who devised the shield had several reasons, They protect the springs and the perches AND add an element of structural security by containing the springs. Ask anyone who has installed 620 springs if they would remove theirs. I don't think so.

To sacrifice safety for cosmetic purposes seems, well..... not very bright.

I disagree I have seen several with the coil over conversion or mustang II conversion that have removed that piece and welded in a new piece that is completely flat.. I think if done right it might even be stronger

hi there i was needed to know something about my 65 ford fairlane coil plate the coil and rubber has busted though the hole in the plate i think the plate compress the coil and want to replace it for that reason but i cant find one that looks like mine could u help me. iam only 21 years old and learning has much as i can about my car thanks

It's a structural piece. You can't get rid of it.

On the Mustang II front ends they add the drop bar from the firewall to just in front of the bumper to add the strength back. Those that don't do so at thier own peril. I have a customer who installed the Rod and Custom piece on thier '70 cougar, only to have it fail right behind where the frame rail meets the front crossmember. If you add that drop bar you can ditch the entire inner fender skin if you wish.

You need to disassemble the suspension enough to remove the spring and rubber and see if the rest of the shock tower is strong enough to repair. If not you will have to search for a replacement shock tower. Either way you're going to have to find someone who can weld it up for you.

while back on here for the shock tower cover. They were like $100 a set but they were cool.

I looked for the link but cant find it, I thought I bookmarked it.
