My 68 8" stock rear chunk is worn out but is still installed in my car. I have access to a cheap 65 rear chunk in good shape. I've searched the forums but cannot find any saying whether these 2 rear chunks are interchangeable. Can I do a direct swap, putting a 65 stock 8" rear chunk into stock 68 8" rear end? And will the U-bolts for the driveshaft connection still be in the same place? Thanks

all 8" chunks will interchange with all other 8" rear ends, even if you get the chunk from a mustang ll.

Although it should fit, the 65-66 mustang 8" is weaker than the 67 and up 8". The earlier one is only rated up to around 300 ft/lbs of torque. I know because I blew one to pieces, shot the pinion and driveshaft out of my car.

A lot of times you can find a Mustang II chunk with some nicer gears!
