I got a problem. I just picked up a 1966 with a 289. The engine has been rebuilt. I can see the timing marks on the harmonic balancer but I can't see the timing pointer. The water pump port is on the passenger side. Does anyone have a picture of where this point belongs? Thanks.

On many 289's the timing pointer is what looks like a bolt head with a flat blade screwdriver slot cut into it. It's mounted on the driver's side of the timing chain housing at about the 2 O'clock position. The slot is the actual mark.

True, you can do the timing by ear or with a vacuum gauge...

Thanks

Thanks everyone. I found where it is suppose to be, but it is not. I will be doing the vacuum gauge method. I appreciate all the help.
