OK guys I know we have lots of threads about cowl repair out there, but i have seen varying opinions from several people and sites on this. I have removed the top part of the cowl and the rust wasnt quit as bad as I expected. on the passenger side there is only a small rust hole on the side of the hat and then some pitting just around the hat, but the metal feels solid. I have patch panels for bothe sides, but should I replace the panel on the passenger side to fix the hat and get rid of the pitting or just pact the hat and treat it for the rust and leave the pitted metal if it feels solid?

Your right not too bad at all. I'd take a wire wheel to pitting and see if it opens up more holes. Also, take an ice pic and give it some good hits and patch only whats bad. I've alos used a small spot blaster on spots like that - don't make as much of a mess but you know you got the rust. Not to crazy about rust treatment on areas that will see moisture in future. After done cover putting with por-15. You're right about varying opinions though - my first inclination was just cut out and put whole patch in since your this far. BUt some advice I got a while ago that seems to work is only cut out whats bad and replace and it youcan can get rust out of pits you should be fine.

I would just patch the bad spots....I went through the same repair, I only replaced one side and POR15 the other side. Yours don't look that bad...View attachment 155483

I would replace the driver side at the least.

yeah the driver side is gone, I was able to just pull on the hat a little and it came right off. There is only about a dime sized hole on the passenger hat and then a fair amount of pitting.
