66 flywhel

Hello everyone.

I have a 66 convertible with a 1983 5.0 and a 5 speed T5 (Asked about that in a previous thread and decided to keep the tranny I have for now.)

The original problem was that it didn't have the right engine plate between the engine and bellhousing (it had an automatic transmission plate and I could see the flywheel at the bottom). I decided to change out the plate and picked one up for a 1983 engine. I'm now waiting on a bellhousing that will fit (and I've also decided to go with a cable operated clutch). Right away, I noticed that the location for the starter in the new engine plate was a litle closer to the center of the plate than the old one.

I put the new plate in and put the flywheel on (hand tightened the bolts) when I put the starter in place to make sure it was all going to fit, it didn't. It looks like the flywheel is too big.

Des this mean I have the wrong flywheel or the wrong starter? (there was a lot of mixing and matching done by the guy I bought the car from, and I'm trying to get it straightened out) When I measured the flywheel diameter (I have not counted teeth yet), it was 14 inches across.

Is this one for a 66 289 maybe? Does anyone know the difference between the 66 and the 83(diameter and teeth)? If I do have to replace the flywheel (I have found them on the net) I'd rather find out for sure before I put down a 100 or so dollars for one.

Maybe I should have done a search before posting. Argh, a newbie mistake

In another post someone suggested a 157 tooth flywheel is needed rather than a 164 tooth which I probably have (time to go count teeth!)

Anyone agree with that?

I picked up a stock 83 mustang 5.0 flywheel at autozone. Going to check the fit tomorrow. At the very least, if it doesnt work, I can take it back.

The flywheel from autozone and clutch I bought from pepboys wouldnt bolt up. Ended up being due to different manfacturers. (Sachs flywheel, Luk clutch) Ended up getting a Luk flywheel and everything went together nicely. I was told it was a 28oz. Guess I'll find out when I start the car.
